Many people complain that they don’t like to go camping because it’s difficult to get to sleep and/or remain asleep in the outdoors. Fear of the dark, fear of wildlife, fear of crazed axe murderers…fear, fear, fear keeps so many people from enjoying the beauty of nature. We’re going to assuage your fears with some tips on how to get a fabulous night’s sleep on camping trips!

Make a comfortable bed
You wouldn’t sleep well at home if you just tossed a sleeping bag on the floor, would you? Getting a good night’s sleep on camping trips is all about comfort. Bring a sleeping pad, air mattress, or other type of supportive cushioning to lay on, with a quality sleeping bag or plenty of warm blankets and a pillow comparable to what you’d use at home.
Wear the right clothing
Depending on how cold it is, you may not need to wear much clothing at all if you’ve made an appropriate bed. Long or short thermal underwear are typically sufficient, and if you want to wear socks, be sure to change into a fresh pair. The socks you’ve been wearing all day are likely moist with sweat, which will make your feet colder in the middle of the night.
Block out sound
While crickets, babbling brooks, and hooting owls are soothing to many people, they may be unnerving to you as you settle in for the night. Bring earplugs or headphones so you can block out ambient noise or bring in your own sounds that will sing you to sleep.
Block out light
Just like ambient noise, flickering lights from the campfire or a flashlight blasting your tent in the middle of the night can keep you from getting a good night’s sleep on camping trips. A broad, snug eye mask will block out all ambient light to help your mind relax and drift away.
Knock yourself out
If you know you’re prone to sleeplessness, a camping trip is the last place you want to put this to the test. Whatever your sleep aid may be, make sure you have an adequate supply for the duration of your trip. You’ll never be sorry you brought them when you actually need them!
