Our goal here at SunnyScope is to get people camping more often in more places, and we do our best to continually provide you up-to-date information on camping destinations around the nation. So it was a great thrill when we came across a website that offers information on where to find free campsites all across the US: FreeCampsites.net.
FreeCampsites.net is a community platform that provides information on where to find free campsites using a map-based search engine, so all you have to do is click on a state to get a list of free campsites, each of which can be expanded for more detailed information. Although finding free campsites is the primary function of this site, the list for each state also includes campgrounds that charge a fee or require a pass or permit so you have a full range of options at your fingertips.
Best of all, site users can also submit campsites with an easy to fill out form that asks a few pertinent questions about the site and allows you to upload pictures to enhance others’ experience when searching campsites. The site focuses primarily on public lands, like land owned by the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) areas, Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), and county or city parks. Wal-Mart parking lots and truck stops are not being accepted at this time.
The site also offers tips on the various types of land and terms that those looking for campsites, whether free or paid, can use to make sure they are within the law and enjoy their camping experience to the fullest. If your goal is to see more of the US by way of camping, this website is a fantastic resource and will only get better as more of us put it to good use!
