snowshoeingThere are many winter sports to enjoy while the snow is fresh. Some, like snowboarding and skiing, can be fairly cost-prohibitive hobbies. Snowshoeing is a far less expensive alternative that can be just as rewarding. As an added benefit to the financial savings, snowshoers burn 45 percent more calories than simply walking or running at a comparable speed!

There is a saying, “If you can walk, you can snowshoe.” This is a fairly accurate statement. Of course, the elderly and infirm should consult a doctor before beginning any exercise regimen, especially one that takes place in extreme temperatures. In general, though, snowshoeing is an easy hobby sport to take up. Not much is required in the way of equipment, and any area packed with fresh powder can serve as prime practice grounds.

The only equipment required to enjoy this sport is a pair of snowshoes and a set of lightweight poles. A backpack or snowshoe bag is recommended to carry shoes when not in use. Some stores offer package deals, though you may prefer to purchase your snowshoes and poles separately. In either case, these items should not cost more than $200-300 in total.

This is a far more economical hobby than skiing, which can cost upwards of $1000 just for a full set of gear, to say nothing of ski lift tickets and lodging if travel is required. While there can be some risk to buying used snowshoes and poles due to the chance they may be bent or otherwise abused, this is definitely an option for those on a tight budget.

To start practicing your new craft, head out to any wilderness area with a decent cover of snow. If venturing out alone, never forget to let someone know the location you’ll be heading to, and how long you intend to be there. If you want some company, do an online search for your town or community to see if there are groups or other snowshoers looking for companions. For any hobby that exists, you can be sure there are people out there looking for other like-minded people with the same interests to enjoy these activities with.

snowshoeingFor experienced snowshoers, competitive snowshoeing can be a great way to burn off the holiday pounds and get relief from everyday stress and anxiety in a healthy, positive way. Snowshoe races and endurance challenges let people show off their skills and network with others who share a love for the winter sport. If you’re looking for a new way to exert some effort and learn a new skill this winter, why not try your hand at snowshoeing?
