Apples are a great fruit for camping because they’re so versatile. They make a great snack, breakfast accompaniment, or dessert, and their sweet and tart flavors don’t need much dressing up to be delicious. The next time you’re out camping with your dutch oven, try these recipes to wow your campmates. They’re simple in ingredients and preparation, but the result will be outstanding.
Dutch Oven Apple Cobbler – Serves 8
You’ll need:
10-15 medium to large Granny Smith apples
8 oz brown sugar (or half of a 1 lb bag)
1 store-bought yellow cake mix
1 stick unsalted butter
powdered cinnamon

12-inch dutch oven
knife and cutting board
aluminum foil
- Prepare your coals. You will need approximately 25: 10 coals below, 10-15 on top.
- Line your dutch oven with aluminum foil. (This step is for easier cleanup; you may skip it if you wish.)
- Core the apples and slice them into six rings apiece.
- Place the apple rings in the oven, stacking them alternately on each new layer.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar over the apples.
- Cover the apples and brown sugar with the yellow cake mix, but do not mix together.
- Cut the stick of butter into thick pats, and place evenly over the entire mixture.
- Sprinkle with cinnamon, and place the lid on the dutch oven.
- The cobbler will require 30-45 minutes to cook with the coal ratio described above. It is finished when the crust begins to brown and you can see the sugar and butter bubbling up through the crust.
- Be sure to let this cool 5-10 minutes before devouring!
Dutch Oven Candy Apples – Serves 1 per Person
You’ll need:
1 cored apple per person
1 jar maraschino cherries
1-2 c brown sugar
raisins
Equipment
any size dutch oven
apple corer
aluminum foil
can opener
- Line your dutch oven with aluminum foil (this step can be skipped).
- Core one apple for each camper.
- Place apples right side up in the dutch oven until it is filled.
- Mix together the brown sugar and raisins, and spoon some into each apple’s center.
- Open can of pineapple, making sure to save the juice.
- Place a slice of pineapple on each apple, and then a maraschino cherry.
- Pour the pineapple juice from the can all over everything, and cover with lid.
- Place over coals and put coals on the lid, approximately 10-15 for each side, and bake for 30 minutes.
- If the apples are still too firm for your taste after 30 minutes, cover and cook for another 15.
- Allow to cool 5-10 minutes before serving.
