For many people, studying volcanoes is one of the more memorable early science lessons. They helped to form the Earth, create spectacular visuals when they erupt, and have helped form many parts of history from Pompei to the Hawaiian Islands.

Explorer Sam Cossman is dialing volcano exploration up to 11.

Exploring Vanuatu’s Marum crater in the South Pacific using a drone, he’s working to create a model in 3D. This model of the crater will hopefully assist scientists to understand the volcano as well as building models to predict general volcanic activity.

Take a look at this amazing footage he’s been able to capture:

While the images are amazing, the science behind it could help us to better understand how our world has evolved as well as save countless lives by predicting future catastrophic events.
