Texas is well-known for its hot, arid climate, so it comes as no surprise that a swimming hole ranks high on the list of places to visit, especially in the summer. While the Lone Star state has no shortage of swimming holes, one that should not be missed is the Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve.
This all-natural swimming hole was created when the dome of an underground river collapsed thousands of years ago, revealing a large jade-colored pool that’s constantly fed by natural spring waters. Its stunning beauty and easy-to-find location just 23 miles west of Austin have made it a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
Visitors to Hamilton Pool are treated to massive slabs of limestone for basking, enormous stalactites dripping from the grotto’s ceiling, and an abundance of natural flora and birds that are cultivated by the tranquil waters of the pool. As this is a nature preserve, there is no fishing, camping, campfires, mountain biking, or pets allowed, but a day’s soak is definitely worth the restrictions. Check out what you can expect to find on your visit to Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve.
