In the camping and outdoor culture, America is renown for its diverse and plentiful places to camp and explore nature. From the Blue Ridge Mountains of the eastern US to the rich forests and coastlines of the Pacific Northwest, there is an endless array of terrain to adventure in. But if you’re after a more awe-inspiring landscape, you won’t want to miss the best camping spots in Sequoia National Park.
The Sequoia National Park is set amongst some of the most beautiful land in California. Here, visitors can experience the whole array of natural splendor: mountains, valleys, hills, world record-sized trees and forests, wildlife, rivers, and streams. There are many camping spots within the park, but these three spots in particular often yielded as the best camping spots in Sequoia National Park.
1. Buckeye Flat
This camp area is about 4 miles in from the park’s main entrance and is located in the foothills area. The wildlife here includes bears, squirrels, foxes, and mule deer, among many others. With the river by your side and nature’s beauty all around, this tent-only site is understandably well-loved.
2. South Fork
South Fork is the smallest developed campsite in the park, but it is one of the best. Campers here experience the ecosystem and wildlife of the shores of the beautiful Kaweah River. This is also the exact altitude at which the oak forests transition to rolling evergreens. Camping here is open year-round and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
3. Atwell Mill
A bit deeper in the park lies the Atwell Mill camp area. By car, it takes about an hour to reach from the park’s entrance, but it is worth it. Here, campers can experience the wonders of the park’s Mineral King area: untouched wilds, gigantic forests, beautiful mountainous views and hiking opportunities, cabins for rent, and much more.
