Burning Man takes place in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, commencing this year August 25 – September 1. Anyone who plans on participating in this week long communal event will have to make extensive preparations. The Black Rock Desert is quite isolated and requires significant supplies. Let’s take a look at just five things that will be necessary for camping at Burning Man.

1. Sun Protection

Nevada’s Black Rock Desert experiences temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. Those who plan on camping at Burning Man will have to take precautions to protect themselves from the punishing sun rays. There should be a substantial shade for the camp site, plenty of water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, lip balm, and food and drinks with electrolytes to replenish the body.

2. Warm Clothing And Blankets

Since Burning Man takes place in the desert at an elevation of 4,000 feet, it will get quite cold at night. Temperatures can dip into the 40s when it gets dark. Be sure to bring some hoodies, sweaters, pants, a light coat, a warm sleeping bag, and blankets to stay warm during the night. Faux fur is a popular fabric on the playa, and besides being incredibly cozy when temperatures drop, it adds a lot of fun and character to the wardrobe!

3. Tent Ropes, Cables, Stakes And Weights

This part of the desert endures fierce winds and storms that seemingly pop up out of nowhere. Dust storms are also common. Anyone who plans on camping at Burning Man should bring stakes, cables, ropes, and weights to secure their tent as well as their other belongings like chairs, ice chests, card tables, and sleeping bags. A tent will do a camper no good if it blows away during a storm. Make sure that it is battened down at all times.

4. First Aid Kit

Since camping at Burning Man requires a battle with the elements that could lead to any number of ailments or injuries, campers will need a first aid kit. It should include adhesive bandages, gauze, splints, oral rehydration salts/kaolectrolyte, hydrogel dressings, tincture of benzoin, peroxide, tylenol, benadryl, a fever thermometer, a scalpel blade, tweezers, a needle, thread, and latex gloves to protect the hands from blood and fluids. Store your first aid kit in a plastic container with a tight seal to keep it as clean and sanitary as possible.

5. Camp Marker

Every Burning Man camper should bring along a camp marker in the form of a retractable flagpole with a flag, a flasher or another distinctive marker so that he can find his camp from a distance. Campers can even attach a glow stick to the top of their camp marker for even more visibility at night.
