When building a bug-out bag, it’s important to understand that you will not be able to pack everything that could possibly be needed in the event of any kind of disaster. Therefore, prioritization is critical when deciding what to include in the bag.
Weight is a very important consideration when preparing a bug-out bag. If the bag will be carried on foot, it’s important to keep it light enough that you will be able to walk many miles with it. Its weight needs to be limited to what you can reasonably carry.
Water is the most essential thing to put in a bug-out bag. Many preppers also include supplies like water purification tablets, filters, and other water purification devices so that they will be able to use any water resources available once their supply has run out.
Food is also important to include. High-calorie, nutritious food is best. It’s also advantageous if the food is easy to eat and does not need to be cooked. Trail mix, beef jerky and energy bars are all possible foods that could be included. The prudent prepper will take care to note the expiration dates of all foods included in the bag, and use and replace them as necessary to keep them fresh.
A lightweight LED flashlight is a necessity, as is several types of firestarters. Many preppers include multi-tools, knives, and knife sharpeners in their bug-out bags. A small, lightweight first aid kit is also essential. A map of the local area should be included in the bag, along with a list of important phone numbers and a list of important documents to grab if there is time to do so. It’s also a good idea to include some cash in small bills in the bag.
Other supplies will depend on the terrain and situation that the pack’s owner anticipates facing if the bug-out bag is ever needed. One would pack differently for bugging out through snowy mountains than through the desert or the tropics. For those who might need to bug out in cold climates, a blanket, hat, gloves, and extra thick hiking socks would be appropriate to include.
Having bags pre-packed with these essential supplies will help most people minimize discomfort when coping with short-term disasters. It’s never too late to prepare your bug-out bag and be ready for disaster if and when it strikes!
