Bombardier Beetle feature

Creeping around in the outdoor world is a tiny insect who walks softly but carries a big stick. The bombardier beetle is small, about the size of your pinkie fingernail, and somewhat resembles a lightning bug. But this guy is no lightweight — when threatened, it lets fly with a scalding hot blast of toxic chemicals powerful enough to deliver a painful burn to a human and possibly kill an offending insect.

Found on almost every continent, bombardier beetles prefer wooded and grassy areas in temperate zones. They hunt and eat other insects but only use their secret weapon to keep from being eaten themselves.

Scientists are in awe over how this battle ready beetle could have evolved its unusual defense, wondering how previous generations didn’t blow themselves up. Watch this informative video that explains how the bombardier beetle keeps its enemies at bay with a powerful and painful blast from its backside.
