California offers some of the most extraordinary and diverse beauty of the outdoors that the United States has to offer. While looking for the best places to camp around San Francisco, the options are limited directly in the city. There are, however, wonderful places to camp in the surrounding areas.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park in Santa Cruz is a fan favorite and is located approximately an hour and forty-five minutes from San Francisco. It features the beauty of towering redwood trees and a wide variety of hiking trails. The park is also the oldest state park in California. One room cabins and also more traditional family campsites are available here.

Mount Diablo State Park is also one of the best places to camp in the San Francisco region, with plenty of family-friendly campsites to choose from. Located just under an hour from the city, the breathtaking view from the top of the mountain is absolutely worth the trip. On a clear day, a good portion of the state is visible from the peak.

If you’re looking for one of the best places to camp for stunning Bay Area views, look no further than Angel Island State Park. Located just outside the city, the island is easily accessed by boat or ferry. Offering hiking trails and beautiful views of the city, the park is a great place to camp and enjoy nature. Dog owners should be aware that furry friends are not permitted on the island.

Our last great campground close to the city is Kirby Cove, located approximately 20 minutes from San Francisco. The campsites are located near the beach and offer picturesque views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The reviews of this campground are overwhelmingly positive, and comes highly recommended by locals and visitors alike.
