Choosing the best hiking backpack can seem like a daunting task. There are so many brands to choose from these days. That’s why we’re here — to help you sort through the chaos and find the best hiking backpacks.
When you first begin looking for a backpack, you must decide what you want to use it for. Generally, this breaks down into two categories: backpacking or day hiking. If you plan on backpacking, you’ll want a backpack that is 55L or greater. This will provide you enough space to spend at least three days and two nights in the backcountry. At 65L, you will have enough space for up to four nights and five days out. If you plan to spend an even greater time, or need to carry an exceptional amount of gear, 75L and above would work.
For day hiking or trail running, anywhere from 10L to 38L should suffice. Obviously, the longer the hike, the more room you’ll need to carry food, water, clothes, and other gear. For most readers, I’d recommend a 30L which is a nice middle ground and will generally provide you all the space you need.
