If you need some serenity and scenery, planning a hike through the Blue Ridge Parkway could be just the ticket. No matter what your skill level, the Parkway offers a trail for you to enjoy. Meandering through North Carolina and Virginia, you can escape for one day or several, basking in the peaceful beauty of this American landmark.

Cumberland Knob

Construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway began here at Cumberland Knob in 1935 and it remains a favorite spot for both locals and travelers. Located near the Virginia state line, you can take a leisurely stroll through open fields, and there are many varieties of birds and wildlife to see. A picnic area is available for you to enjoy. Those looking for a challenge can head to the nearby Gully Creek. Described by the Parkway Association as a “strenuous” 2.1 miles, hikers will traverse a steep, rocky section with a running creek to be crossed. Not for first timers or the faint of heart!

Craggy Gardens

Explosions of color in a brilliant floral display can be found here at Craggy Gardens. Bright pink and purple rhododendrons bloom in June and July, while violets, blackberries, and Turkscap lilies pop through the spring and summer. A higher elevation summit of the trail, The Craggy Pinnacle will lead you to a delightful 360 degree view of the surrounding tree-covered slopes.

The Peaks of Otter

Found in the Jefferson National Forest, there are six trails to choose from within the Peaks of Otter. Fishing, picnic areas, and campgrounds are all available here. The Peak of Otter Lodge offers indoor accommodations as well. A fairly easy 1.4 mile loop around the Fallingwater Cascades will take you by a creek fed waterfall.

Humpback Rocks

Once a major route across the Blue Ridge until railroads made their way through the mountains, the distinctive Humpback Rock was a noted landmark for wagon trains.

Costumed interpreters can take you back in time or you can take a self-guided tour of the Mountain Farms buildings. The trails range from the easy ¼ mile Mountain Farm Trail, the moderate .2 mile Greenstone, to the strenuous 2 mile trek up a section of the famed Appalachian Trail.

Lots of history, a broad range of gorgeous flora and fauna, and trails suited to the weekend warrior or the avid adventurer, the Blue Ridge Parkway makes for a memorable destination.
