While there is really nothing comparable to a trek in the snow on a crystal clear day, there is also great danger lurking where you least expect it. Avalanches are common events in areas with heavy snowfall, and particularly likely when the day is sunny and warm, resulting in melting snow and instability between the layers of snowpack. Triggering one can be dangerously simple, as there are often no discernible characteristics to the untrained human eye. If you are the type who lives for the adventure of mountain outbacks, it is crucial to your survival that you are experienced enough to be able to know what to do in the event of an avalanche, and that you use proper survival tools, like a GPS unit and an avalanche airbag device. Watch this video that shows the power of an avalanche, and the efforts rescuers go to for your survival.
