Hawaii is awash in natural wonders, from black sand beaches to soaring mountaintops. It is also home to three active volcanoes. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to Maunaloa and Kilauea, while the Loihi volcano is underwater near the southern coast of Hawaii’s big island. Kilauea has been erupting steadily since awakening in 1983. Lava flows smoothly to the sea in an eruption of steam in this time lapse video. The hardening volcanic flows are especially mesmerizing at night, as flashes of light break the surface like shimmering bolts of lightning.
