Fall is the season that calls out to nature enthusiasts to enjoy America’s many hiking trails. This year, you should consider treating yourself to some of the many amazing northern California hikes that showcase everything this lovely season has to offer.
South Yuba River Independence Trail

Located in the South Yuba River State Park, this two-mile trail gives you a choice of two starting points, offers wheelchair access, and is easy and fun for even small children. Your walk will take you over the Yuba River, across several creeks, underneath a tunnel made of rocks, next to wooden flumes from those early times when prospectors searched for gold and amongst wild grape vines and blackberry bushes. You can expect to see many plants and animals, and you will find signs posting facts about most things you encounter. Picnic tables are scattered throughout the trail, so you should be sure to pack a good lunch to complete a wonderful day. Your dog is also welcome on this trail.
Dipsea Trail

Muir Woods houses this wonderful trail that actually connects with the Ben Johnson Trail and the Hillside Trail in a fascinating four-mile loop. Have your binoculars and camera ready for the spectacular mountain and coastal views. You will have the opportunity to enjoy amazing redwood trees, herds of deer, a lovely variety of plants and animals and even possible bobcat sightings. This trail is moderately difficult, but it is well worth it for those interested in photo opportunities.
Alamere Falls

For those up to hiking over seven miles, the Palomarin Trailhead at Point Reyes National Seashore will take you to a stunning waterfall that cascades down a 40-foot bluff onto Wildcat Beach. On the way, you will have the opportunity to enjoy lake views, immense groves of eucalyptus and glorious views of the Pacific Ocean. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch in your backpack to enjoy when you reach the falls.
