The largest city in the country may not call to mind camping, but the fact is that there are plenty of places to pitch a tent in the greater NYC area. Read on for advice about the best places to camp near New York City.
1. Croton Point Park
This classic campground in the Westchester Valley is about an hour’s train ride north of NYC, but feels miles away from the city’s hustle and bustle. Camp in tents or cabins that are a stone’s throw from the oldest wineries in New York State, the park’s nature center, and miles of hiking and biking trails.
2. Black Bear Campground
Located in Orange County, New York, Black Bear touts itself as the “nearest full service campground to New York City.” While it’s primarily an RV park, trailers and cabins are also available to rent. Amenities at this family-friendly park include a pool, miniature golf, playground, arcade, arts and crafts, hiking, and special events.
3. Fire Island National Seashore
Enjoy nature without leaving the city limits at this location in Long Island, at the Otis Pike High Dunes Wilderness. Rent a tent or tiki hut where you can spend the day on the beach and the night enjoying the area’s peaceful solitude. For those interested in water sports, you can kayak and swim in the Atlantic Ocean.
4. Floyd Bennett Field
Did you know that you can camp in Brooklyn? This former airport turned national park offers campsites on a nightly or weekly basis, perfect for out-of-towners who want to explore the city without paying exorbitant hotel prices. The sites cost $50 for three nights and are relatively sparse, including just a picnic table and fire pit.
