One of the best parts about living on the East Coast is how many phenomenal places there are to camp within a short drive of home. Whether you live in the North or the South, there are hundreds of great spots available within just a few hours’ drive of your doorstep. The only trouble is deciding which one to choose! To get you started in the right direction, take a look at this guide to the top five places to camp on the East Coast.

1. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

This campground located in southern New Jersey has everything campers could possibly wish for. There are more than 20 miles of hiking trails to explore. There are campsites available for both tents and RV users, complete with water and electrical hookups. It is a huge park with 3,200 acres of wilderness to explore. This means that even though it draws large crowds, it never feels crowded.

2. Myrtle Beach State Park

People who live in the South will want to make a plan to visit here as soon as possible. Set right on the beach, there are piers for fishing, beaches for relaxing and lots of shaded sites in the woods to set up tents in. There are also RV camping sites available. Anyone who gets tired of roughing it can always head into Myrtle Beach for some creature comforts and excitement.

3. Assateague Island National Seashore

Located on the border of Virginia and Maryland, this amazing national park is within a few hours’ drive of millions of residents of the East Coast. The camping conditions are a bit rough, but that hardly matters when you are on the beach and get to see the wild horses that roam the park in large herds.

4. Everglades National Park

This is the place to go for those in the South who want to see some amazing wildlife. There are sites with creature comforts and backcountry sites to enjoy. There are also lots of amazing trips to be had on the hiking trails and canoe routes that run all over the park.

5. Acadia National Park

This amazing place in Maine is home to the highest mountain on the East Coast. There are two campgrounds in the park, and backcountry camping is available as well. Visitors will also enjoy being able to look out over the ocean, hike the amazing trails and spot the abundance of wildlife that populates the park.
