Let’s be honest, no one likes mosquitos. They buzz around looking for a poor creature to drain, and leave in place a horrible itchy little bump. Not to mention they’re one of the few animals/insects that could be exterminated with no harmful effect to the ecosystem. If you want to prevent these bothersome insects from invading your yard but are concerned about the harmful effects of chemicals on children, pets, and other family members, consider these five natural ways to repel insects.
1. Insect-Repelling Plants
Plants are one of the great natural ways to repel insects, since there are many fragrant plants that keep the bugs away. Basil plants act as a natural mosquito repellent, so incorporating this herb into your garden keeps the bugs away with the bonus of allowing you access to this delicious ingredient. Other plants that deter mosquitoes and other insects include catnip, lemongrass, and rosemary.
2. Garlic
It’s not just to keep vampires away; garlic is also effective in making your skin unappetizing to mosquitoes and other insects. If you already eat foods with a lot of garlic, you might already find that the bugs tend to stay away. You can also rub a clove of cut garlic over exposed skin before going outside. If you want the repellant without the odor, consider taking a garlic supplement.
3. Essential Oils
Combining a few drops of essential oil with distilled water in a spray bottle makes an excellent homemade bug repellant with a pleasant odor. Try lemon eucalyptus, lavender, cinnamon, tea tree, or citronella oil.
4. Marigolds
These beautiful red, orange, and yellow flowers make a picturesque addition to your garden as well as providing effective protection from insects. Beyond just planting the flowers, you can also blend a cup of leaves, stems, and flowers with two cups of water to create a DIY bug spray.
5. Yard Maintenance
One of the most effective natural ways to repel insects is to make sure your outside area isn’t conducive to bugs. You should remove standing water, keep the grass trimmed, and avoid candlelight and incandescent bulbs. Placing a fan on the patio or deck can also keep bugs away when you’re enjoying the space.
