I used this with a 20 degree topquilt in the UP during a 30 degree night, in my hammock. I have to say it worked, however that was pushing the limit; it felt as though the heat was just trying to stay inside. If I moved too much, the topquilt would untuck itself from the pad and a cold spot would appear. But, later in the trip during 40-50 degree nights, it was perfect! But, as perhaps to be expected, I would wake with condensation at the lowest point of the pad. The colder it is, the worse this is because it contributes to cold. In the warmer 50-60 degree nights, I went without that 20 degree topquilt because I would have boiled. This was regrettable as I was on the brink of cold, with only my insulated jacket on my lower legs/feet, and a wool shirt for my torso. And I felt a little sticky because I wasn't totally dry from the day's hiking. If you're on a tight budget and wanting to get started, this isn't a bad option! Just make sure you have a good topquilt or insulation on top. The key pros are affordability, weight, and packability. It doesn't weigh much and doesn't take up a lot of space. However, it can be a workout to roll up to get it into the stuffsack! I usually have to deflate it once as a preliminary, then fold it, open the valve, and roll it up again to get the rest of the air out. It can be quite a squeeze, but it works! I haven't noticed any leaks.

Warranty is unbelievable. Have had this camp pad for 6 years and then it started to leak. Sent it in for free repair and instead got a free replacement.

I really like this pad, it is the best one I have owned. I find that I do not slip off the pad in the middle of the night compared to something like NeoAir® XLite™ Sleeping Pad which is slick. Even though NeoAir pads are much lighter and more compact, I would choose this one. This pad is perfect if you backpack or camp, but don't need something extremely light or something high off the ground for super cold nights. I also find that this pad is more durable and I am less worried about puncturing it. Overall, it is an awesome pad for the price.

I was looking for a slightly less durable and slightly lighter version of the original therm-a-rest. Alaska destroys everything; anyway; it made a nice hole in it, not to big and not too small, easily found and patched with a urethane adhesive. Unfortunately, the urethane peeled off after some use. The specs say this pad is MADE of urethane, so why doesn't urethane adhesive adhere to it? Riddle me this.

I used this product every night for a 30 day mountaineering trip in the Waddington Range of British Columbia. With a 5 day bushwack, sharp alpine rocks, and freezing storms, the trip was brutal on my group's gear. I did not have a single problem with the trailscout for the entire trip, even after multiple nights of cowboy camping on it directly on rocks. Furthermore, the r-value proved true, as we camped on snow on glaciers most nights of the expedition, and the chill from the snow beneath me did not penetrate the pad. The best extolment I can give this pad, however, is that the absolute worst part of each day during the expedition was deflating the pad in the morning and having leave its warmth and comfort. I can assure any potential buyer that bringing this pad on a tip will make it your reliable safe haven from the cold and rugged wilderness. Let me be clear that this is not the lightest pad you can purchase from thermarest; however, it is the best balance of durability and weight I have experienced.

Would've given this pad a 5 star but it fails to self-inflate. Really doesn't matter though because it only takes a few breaths to fully inflate it. I would surely recommend this sleeping pad to anyone. Rolls up and fits nicely into the stuff sack it came in and it doesn't take much space.

I've had a regular size trail scout for a couple of years now through dozens of hiking trips around the central US, as well as backpacking in Ireland and Italy. For the money, it's easy to use, warm for the majority of the camping I do (it's been good for all but my winter trips), and far more comfortable than a closed-cell foam pad. It packs down fairly small as well, without having to try too hard or wrestle it. There are certainly more comfortable, warmer, and lighter products out there, but it's been an effective, solid, and reasonably budget-friendly option. Now that I'm hiking a lot more and cutting weight from my pack and doing winter hikes, I'll be acquiring an Xtherm MAX to extend my options.

I've used this on several Midwest backpacking trips and sleep comfortably without having to pack some monstrous pad. Much preferred to foam.

I bought the Therm-a-Rest Trail Scout last winter, and since then I have put this thing under some serious stresses. Its been a long time favourite of mine, and I'm proud to say that "I respect this pad" for its Warmth, Comfort, Functionality, and Cost. This pad is a true winner, especially if you are new to the game. It is an excellent series and hope to see them for years to come. The only thing I would say about this pad that I would say is opposing is if you are intending to sleep on the ground, Its material can be punctured quite easily.... however the repair side of things is a breeze. Gorilla Tape To Go sticks to this pad like no other, making it the easiest pad repair I have ever done.

Bought this about a year ago and it has been great. Used it in multiple backpacking trips and have always had a great night sleep.

This product is obviously not high end, but for what you pay you get great quality. I've used mine many times the last few years, no leaks at all. A little larger than some of the backpacking ones, but still good cushion and great warmth!

I've bought this 5 years ago, and used it several times during camping in a tent. However, the sleep is quite comfy, some small problems are there with: -Self inflating is just a tale for puppies, but giving 3-4 bigger breath into and it gets the shape for sleep. -Sticky and Raspy when turning on it.with bare skin

I was in great need for a new roll mat. Considering I was using a cumbersom old air pad that was like sleeping on a half inflated balloon. I stumbled across the trail scout. It was light weight, compact and durable. Not to mention the price was right. I have thus used my trail scout for five years now without missing a beat. Comfortable to sleep on especially for my arthritis. It's not as thick as most pads but for the buck it's well worth it! I liked it so much I purchased a second one for my wife. Since then we've been taking our dog with us and as long as there is a blanket on the pad her nails don't cut into the pad.

I had my Trail Scout out on the trail for the first time last weekend & I'm so glad I bought it. It's more comfortable then a foam mat & much lighter then my blow up mattress.

I bought three of these for my kids to use while backpacking. They are a good air pad, easy to blow up (it is self inflating, but I usually have to blow a little extra air in) and easy to roll up and pack. Lightweight and good construction, my kids are rough on things and so far (after about a year and 20 nights of sleeping on the air pad) they have held together great with no issues. The pad is a little thin for me, but I am a big guy at 6 foot 2 and 215 lbs, so so marks down for that. I feel like the price is good for the quality.

I snagged this pad on a deep discount deal a few years ago. It has been used in every kind of condition imaginable. The time it takes to fill this bad boy is less than half that of my wife's Big Agnes pad. It provides an exceptional amount of comfort and protection from the cold ground, considering its low profile. After a hard day on the trail, my body thanks me when I retire on my Thermarest.

I have used this pad a dozen times or so. It'll keep you warm. It self inflates and add three or five full breaths and it's ready to go. It is not the thickest pad, but it makes a huge difference.

Bought the trail scout at Sports Authority. Used it a couple times backpacking. Used it at Big Bend National Park. Wish it had more loft when it self inflated. But, it's been comfortable and it's good for the low price.

I bought two of these for me and my partner two years ago for backpacking. While they aren't the lightest thermarest sleeping pad, the scout has two features I adore. First, the scout has a rubbery, almost sticky rubber coating. This is great because it keeps the pad from sliding around on the nylon floor of the tent and it helps me and my slick sleeping bag stay on the pad. I often hear that as a complaint about thermarest pads - not an issue on this model. Second, this pad is durable! We use our pads a lot and have even used them day after day for several months at a time (and that use was outdoor in WA, OR, CA, MT). I would guess we have at least spent 200+ nights on our pads and after all this time neither leaks. Highly recommended

I bought 2 of these several months ago for the Wife & I. These are a GREAT 3-Season Backpacking Sleeping Pads. As a bonus, they fits perfectly in the zip on side pockets of my KarrimorSF Predator 80-130 Liter PLCE Modular Backpack. These Sleeping Pads inflate relatively quickly, requiring only a couple of extra puffs to bring the pad up to full inflation. They deflate even quicker with a little extra help & pack easily into the provided stuff sack.

I bought this about two months ago from my local sporting goods store. I got home and was a little concerned that it wasn't very thick, but as soon as I laid down on it and adjusted it to my liking I knew it was the best.

Used to rock a much thicker big agnes pad that weighed close to 2 pounds. Made the change to the ridgerest with a half size scout on top, great combo and really comfortable.

I bought a competitor's sleep mat a couple years ago and had battled with it from the start. Too large to fit in my pack, required the user to inflate even though it was considered self inflating, pin holes appearing near the nozzle. NOT THIS PAD. This mat fits in my pack nicely and is super light weight and its truly self inflating. No holes, thought I've only camped with it 3 times.

Love. Love. Love.

I bought this when I knew I was going to spend a year doing a lot of camping and adventuring. Thanks to its thin and light build, I was able to squish it in to almost any packing arrangement (and, if all else failed, lash it to the side of my pack). It was easy to get inflated. I can fill the whole thing with only a few deep breaths, which made setting up camp quickly much easier. It's held up astoundingly through many rigours. It kept me surprisingly comfortable and warm through any variety ...

Very comfortable!!
By dt1225
I was so surprised at the comfort of this pad. I am a big guy (6'2" 250#) and this has not let me down. Self inflation is quick and I only have to add 4-5 puffs of air to get it to my liking. On VERY cold nights, I put it in a home made sleeping bag liner (flannel from local craft store) and it slides nicely inside my mummy bag.
Therm-A-Rest Trail Scout Mattress
The rubber surface is an advantage, it s easier to keep clean and it compacts faster and smaller than the others. Therm-A-Rest Trail Scout Mattress inflates and can be put away very quick with very little work. The Trail Scout also comes with a bag for easy handling and storing. Therm-a-Rest truly is an amazing product; it s the most essential piece of camping gear as it makes you enjoy camping.
