Great for hiking and for use with work boots. I have to wear steel-toes at work and these socks keep my feet warm, comfortable, and odor free. I have several pairs that have lasted over 5-years. These awesome socks will last for years if you just keep them out of the dryer and away from your dogs ( :

I've only worn them once so I don't know about durability but all day my feet stay warm and dry and I work outside the weather was about 20°

These are my favorite smartwool sock style, and favorite thick sock design out of the major companies. I only have older versions of this model to compare it to, and it seems that the older versions had a tighter weave. The new version also had several irregularities before even putting them in the wash (some of the weave had areas that had pulled up). So far they're very comfortable and warm; we'll see how they hold up. I liked these a lot more than the mountaineer version even though that one is thicker because the toe seam on that one did not align well, and the cuff is too tall and tight in one specific spot, versus these have a uniform elastic going up and down the cuff. If you are looking for a specific smartwool thick sock, this is the one I would opt for and between going large or small, I would order a size down if you're in-between. The other tigher-knit thinner versions of their socks are too small in small, but these ones run a little loose.

Comfort & Cushioning The extra padding in the heel, toe, and sole makes an immediate difference. Whether you're walking, hiking, skating, or working all day, the cushioning absorbs impact and reduces foot fatigue. They feel soft and supportive without being bulky.

They only last about 5-10 years. Otherwise superb!

I have been buying these for years. At first, at a local shoe store, when they sold out, the new people didn't carry them, so I started buying them online. They are comfortable, I get the extra padding, and they really do help. They are warm in the winter and are not too hot in the summer.... perfect. I have bought the red and the blue and love both. Definatley worth the money, they last a very long time, and you don't have to replace them as fast as regular socks, imo.

I love these socks. I also have the longer version, but these are better for my climate as the longer ones definitely keeps me warmer, but my area doesn't normally get cold enough to justify wearing them as often. Winter normally hovers are 40F where I live with spats down below that, so these are the perfect level of foot/leg coverage for the normal temperature for me.

I first purchased these socks back in summer, 2006 while attending a trade show in Freeport. I hit the Bean outlet across from the mothership, and found a pair of these on the clearance rack. From that day on, these became my favorite "warm and comfy" socks. I now have 8 pairs of these socks in varying states of "newness", and I replace 1 or 2 pair every year. Each pair lasts a good 5-6 years - I wear them indoors as slipper-socks, as well as with my hiking boots when I go out for hikes/walks. I highly recommend these. I have never been disappointed with the quality or durability.

I put on Smartwool socks and my feet were like, oh? this is how we're living now? Somehow they keep things warm but not swampy, cozy but not claustrophobic, and they never get that end-of-day "please burn these" smell. I've worn them walking, lounging, traveling, and during those moments when the floor is so cold it feels personal-and they show up every time. They're soft, they breathe, they don't sag, and they make all my other socks feel like they were made during a dark time in history. Not a real sheep, sure-but if comfort were livestock, these would be prize-winning.

I finally had to replace a pair of Smartwool socks-and I'm pretty sure they were more than 10 years old. They've been through travel, job sites, countless washes, and everything in between. Honestly, they held up so well that I never even bothered using the warranty. They just refused to wear out. If there's one thing Smartwool gets right, it's durability that quietly proves itself year after year.

Comfortable but ugly. They are not versatile for different outfits. They could become relevant like sorel did with creating style. Please do that smartwool!!!

I've been wearing these socks for 30 years. They keep my feet warm on alpine routes and cold concrete warehouse floors. They wear like iron. Buy a few pairs and rotate them during the week. You may need to upsize boots to accommodate the sock bulk. That's what creates the warmth (trapped air and loose-er boots).

I first bought Smart Wool hiking socks for a trip to hike the Inca Trail back in 2004 and they were awesome! Ever since then I have used them for the majority of trips I take (I travel a lot) as well as for work socks. Generally, if I am wearing socks, they are Smart Wool socks. I highly recommend them.

I wore these in my heavy leather Asolo hiking boots while trekking across the Swiss alps, then cross country and telemark skiing while at home in Montana. Very thick, well made durable socks. Super comfortable. Never any blisters.

Best Socks Ever!
By Schulz
The Trekking sock is the best sock I ever had. I am a hotshot firefighter and 16 hours days for two weeks straight are the norm for us. When I upgraded to the Trekking socks from a different store brand I could really feel the difference. Pretty much like trading in your Geo Metro for an Escalade. Really, Really comfortable. I wear them together with the Smartwool liner socks and I dont travel without this combo anymore. Highly reccomended

I am currently deployed in the US Army, serving in the mountain regions of Afghanistan. I had owned these socks prevoious to deployment, and wore them out because I loved them so much. Before I deployed I stocked up on a fresh inventory. So glad I did. I don't do cold, and if my feet are cold, I'm cold - and there's nothing I can do to get warm at that point. These socks are lifesavers. Feet stay warm, dry and comfortable, even in temps as low as -10. If only the rest of our standard issue ge...
