Don't go hiking without it

Maybe I'm not rough enough, but my Platypus items are going on 10+ years old, and still work and look as good as day one. I carry mine inside my backpack, maybe that's why it is not leaking like some have experienced. Regardless, they are durable, and if you shop-smart, you can find them at great prices at some on-line outdoor stores. I've bought dozens of these, and give them out at the holidays etc.. everyone loves them! I like the 1.0 size the best, and also have the 1.8 reservoir. I keep 3 in my fridge filled and chilled at all times.

Two things you should know...

Been using these bottles for years and they are great! I even take my .5L one alpine climbing objectives strapped to my harness in a small stuff sack... lighter and way less bulky than even a small Nalgene. Two things that I've learned over time that others might find useful... 1. The weak point in the SoftBottle is where the hard plastic edge of the bottle top meets the soft plastic bottle, at it's widest and lowest point in the middle where it gets the most hard angle flexing and abrasion. I've had my .5L for more years than I can remember and only this year did it finally spring the micro-est of leaks at that point... it was so small it actually took me awhile to figure out where exactly it was leaking from. A bit of clear tenacious tape over the top and I expect it to continue to serve me well for years to come. 2. I accidentally left a 1L and 2L SoftBottle 90% full of water in our freezer over a long weekend... was prepping a cooler for a road trip and I was short of time to make 3/4 filled ice bottles so I figured some cold water mass would be better than nothing. I fully expected the SoftBottles to have bursted and made a mess in the freezer, but to my surprise they survived fully frozen up to the brim. I'm guessing the material has enough give/flex in it that the expanding ice did not burst the seams of the bottle. Was so stoked they survived since I had just gotten them a few months earlier. I definitely don't recommend doing this on purpose, but the inadvertent test showed me even more how burly these SoftBottles are!

Ultralight and Durable

Taken the SoftBottles out on 2 long hikes. They were dropped at the summit and 1 was stepped on by my son. They held up great. No leaks. They mold to the backpack, unlike rigid bottles which makes packing easier and more comfortable. I love products that are ultralight without sacrificing durability.

So far so good!

Used for a few weeks on a backpacking trip -- worked like a charm! It's easiest to have a rigid vessel around to help refill (I bring a small rigid Nalgene that I use for hot drinks).

Great water bottle

The plastic is more rigid than I was expecting but overall it is working great. I like how it can roll down when empty to save space.

The best bottle for your buck!

The Platy SoftBottle is a wonderful product - durable, flexible and they pack down to nearly nothing when not in use. I put the 1.0L bottle in my ski jacket pocket and can't even tell its there while I'm skiing. The 2.0L is super handy when you're backpacking and can be a great tool for melting snow into drinking water if you're in a pinch. Better yet; if you loose the cap, a standard bottle cap off of a soda bottle will suffice. Two thumbs up!

I have several of the platypus soft bottles. Will buy more

The Soft Bottle .5 liter works out great for me. Usually I fill it about 3/4 full of water and freeze it. Then pack my cooler the next day using the bottle as my ice pack. As it thaws I have extra drinking water.

It's more than a bottle

These are great ways to carry water, but are also invaluable as hot water bottles for your sleeping bag for winter camping, they can make great ice packs (snow and water mixed) for first aid situations, and they can act as travel pillows (fill them with air and wrap a buff or scarf around them for a pillow case). Really, really handy. My only complaint and concern is the cap. ONLY use the simple screw-on cap. All of the easy pop-top caps seem to leak... badly, in my experience. These bottles are also great for carrying wine, scotch, tequila, and other spirits, but the flavors can imprint on the plastic. I have one bottle each for red, white, tequila, and whiskey, depending on what the picnic, back country trip, or event needs. Great for beach trips as they are not glass and fully reusable.

What do you mean by HOT water? 38oC is hot, 100oC is hot.

Hi~ I want to use this to contain DIRTY water then stream into my sawyer filter. But after use, the DIRTY water left inside this bag may produce molds. Luckily I heard that I can use hot water to clean it. That save my life. But how hot can it tolerate? Some post say it can even withstand 100oC boiling water, for me, about 80oC will be enough to kill many bacteria I think. Thank you

Hostess gift

I bought these as hostess gifts. The price was good! I needed to buy 15 of them. So I did. Why do you require my review to be 50 characters minimum? I don’t have that much to say! ??

The perfect reusable water bottle

I needed a reusable bottle to take with me to the Peace Corps and bought this on a whim. It has been the best thing I have decided to take with me. During training, all of the other PCVs were fan-girling over it and even people in my community. It gets the job done. It is so light and durable and doesn't hold onto smells and tastes. And of course the best part is that it is flexible and almost all-together disappears when it is empty. I wish I had brought more than one with me.

Best travel companion

My Platypus is always in my tote -- easy, light, practical. The money saved vs. buying bottles of water in airports is a plus!

Soft bottle with the push pull top.

I choose Platy because there is no plastic taste which I have found with Camelpak. I am glad to see that Platy has begun making other variations of their fluid systems because different applications require different sizes and shapes. I use these in my sailplane as they fit perfectly in the little space I have for them.

Best bottle I have ever had!

I am very impressed with Cascade Designs. Throughout the years I have gone through several of their Platypus soft bottles, they are the best bottles I have ever had. Lightweight, collapsible, easy to drink from and have a good warranty. If you need a little more room in your pack, just take a quick drink from the bottle and it will slim your pack right down. Once they are empty, you can roll them up and put them in your pocket until you can find a place to fill them again. The constant rolling does however eventually take its toll and the bottles will spring leaks after about 1 year. One note: because of the small opening, you can't put ice cubes in them. They don't last forever, but Cascade Designs has been very good to replace them for free, without any questions asked. They are great bottles and the company has always given me great service.

Faithful Platypus fan

I like Platypus bladders for day hiking hydration bladder (2-3L), on-board kayak drinking water, car camp water storage (4+L), and water siphoning(filtering)/trail utility (1L soft bladders). Recently went with Osprey's hydration bladder for my heavy (60L+) pack hydration bladder - preferring their sturdy system and mouth piece (partly because my wife is partial to it and it is easier when we backpack together to be on the same standard, partly because I agree with her that Osprey's is the better system for on-trail hydrating), but I love the utility of Platypus bladders - very strong and durable, easy to repair (a little seam seal will patch up a cat claw or fish hook hole and the repair lasts forever), and an empty bladder in the pack to use for whatever takes up little space and adds negligible weight. So, they'll be with me as long as we engage in outdoor activities.

Take care of them, they will take care of you.

I have been using collapsible water bottles since the '70s. I bought two 100 ounce (or there abouts) Platypus bottles about ten years ago. I have carried them in my backpack when hiking and skiing and tossed them around pretty good on the back of ATVs. Both are still going strong. As for thoroughly drying them, I store the bottles in the basement within a few feet of the furnace. My bottles dry completely in a couple days. I am not sure if my drying experience would be typical or if there is something unique about my situation. I have recommended Platypus water bottles to others.

Great Product

I am a children's ski coach, this soft bottle coupled the drink tube kit, turned upside down in a ski jacket works great to allow kids and adults to get hydration thru out the day.

Good affordable, reliable water storage

I've used collapsible Platy's for the past five years and still have a few of the originals. Tried something recently that I had never done before... Filled one with hot water, dropped it into a hiking sock and then tossed it into my sleeping bag. Warm feet all night! Not a single leak! (I also had some warm water to drink in the a.m.)

Lasted for ~2years!

Bought the 1l bottle almost two years ago. It was great! It did sprout a very slow leak recently in a bottom corner crease.

the cap is easy to misplace

bought this product to travel, not outdoors but road warrior style on airplanes and hotels. oftentimes it is difficult to get water or if you can it costs and arm and a leg. I really like the portability for this type of use. My one suggestion would be to make the cap a different color than clear plastic, as it is it is easy to leave it on the desk. Another approach would be to attach the cap to the bottle.
