MSR XGK Expedition Stove

Working GREAT! CONDITIONS BELOW 0°C, pump, prime, light, it ROARS! Using it with an OliCamp isobutane stove for quick dishes, light it up (unleaded gasoline ( 1-2x per day ) for B and Dinner. Had problems W the last one but this guy is TERRIFIC!

Not only does it boil water in record time, you don't need to worry about bears wandering into camp at dinner time! The noise will make sure of that. Thanks, MSR, for another efficient & durable product.

Designed to Quickly Get Down to Business, this stove RoCks.. - It's not a stove for finesse cooking but rather is one that will perform with strength while in harsh conditions. This stove never fails to ignite and is truly built to last. I question the review where the fellow couldn't get his XGK lit.. On another note I have the MSR Dragonfly for those situations where a more controllable cooking situation is needed. -MSR Rocks!

Works exactly as described. It is kinda loud, but is great for boiling water. Puts out a nice amount of heat for it's size.

The XGK EX Stove is of solid construction and easy to cook on with larger containers or griddles thanks to legs that very sturdy. The stove has sufficient capability in BTU's but lacks control of being able to control the level of heat at low "simmering" levels. The stove can provide lower level heat only by significantly limiting the pressure in the bottle or by turning the small handle slightly on and then turning it off such that the flame cycles between too hot and barely lit.

One of the legs doesn't open properly and it doesn't seem to draw fuel consistently it just putters I really was expecting more. I use these in the military and they were amazing. Maybe I just got a bad one.

I just fell inlove with the design. It is such a robust cooker compared to 4 other cookers I use for my hikes. So I never have to worry too much of it breaking any time soon. Sure, it is a little loud. But its efficiency and practicality far outweigh the the problems of a little bit of sound. If you are looking for a very quiet burner, do not look at Multifuel burners in general. You are looking at the completely wrong direction. These cookers (particularly this one) are here not just to pack a mightly punch, but to get the job done in no time and efficiently. (Plus, I can easily see how much fuel remains in the bottle without having to do a bouyancy test unlike gas cartidges)

Yes, it's a little loud. If you're traveling with the right crowd, they'll understand and live with/appreciate it. Burns most fuels worldwide. I'm not a fan of single use fuel canisters. I own canister stoves but increasingly opt to carry a few extra ounces in order to avoid single use and throwaway. For a few cents you can refill the fuel bottle at any gas station worldwide. Very solid build and uber dependable under all conditions. Not for the ultralight crowd, but not everyone is ultralight all the time. Great for base camp, bike touring, car camping or anytime weight isn't a huge priority. I think everyone should have one for that "just in case moment". Also, A LITTLE KNOW AND VERY IMPORTANT FACT is that the Bialetti 6 cup Moka Pot nestles perfectly in the middle of the burner creating a very safe and stable platform for a great cup of coffee.

Okay, I've done SOOOOO many research, and got to the conclusion that the most robust multi-fuel stove is MSR XGK-EX. MSR XGK-EX beats another stove that "does not need to change nozzle when switching fuel", or even that "multifuel titanium stove one". It's downside is the pump. I have to create an adapter from MSR XGK-EX to Lindal adapter to be able to use a metal pump.

First of all, being a real nimrod when it comes to practical skills, this stove is right down my ally. It?s easy to operate and it?s easy to maintain whenever needed. I know that for some the noise level produced by XGK is a bit to loud, but to me it?s like a dinner bell ringing. I actually enjoy the sound of a stove doing what it does best! So it powerful, easy to maintain, but it?s loud. I once had an issue of leakage from the pump that was due to the colored o-ring in the vent. It started to flake off its painted red color. Once I had the o-ring replaced with a new one off of the maintenance kit, and rubbed off the colored painting (and oiled the o-ring) it went back to its normal functionality. I bring this up because it?s necessary for other buyers to be aware of the issue. Once purchased I?d highly recommend rubbing the painting off of the o-ring head first. I definitely wouldn?t take this stove deep into snow coated wilderness with the painted o-rings undealt with. Except from this trivial issue I have absolutely no complaints and I would definitely buy it again if need be.

Used this stove for many trips, from car camping to backpacking trips and winter expedition in the Canadian north. Always reliable and will last a long time with a full canister (20oz) of fuel. Had this stove for 15+ years and send it for repair for the first time this year. Customer service was awesome and very happy with the whole experience in general. Good to have such reliable equipment in the backcountry.

I have been using my XGK for 35 years... initially I used it for 4, 1 month long canoe trips. I functioned really well and I was even able to make camp bread in a skillet...though it was a challenge. My XGK is still going strong with at least 2 week long trips per year and providing cooking for solo to groups of seven or eight. I see the model has been updated a bit since I bought it but still awesome well built product. Recently had to help out a fellow hiker who ran out of canister fuel...

I love this stove. I love the jet engine noise too, though others may not. It puts out an excellent flame, heating water quickly. If you want to simmer while cooking turn it down and place a heat converter beteen the flames and your pot. While not the lightest of the MSR stove range its reliable power and ease to maintain make the extra weight worth carrying.

My XGK-EX performs better than expected. Every aspect of this stove speaks to design craftsmanship, reliability and performance. If I had to find a downside, it would be to better regulate the flame. Knew this characteristic before purchase so no disappointment. Overall, totally pleased with stove and purchase experience.

The XGK has always been the best stove. I got my first one over 30 years ago. It boils a huge pot of brown rice very quickly , and it goes for weeks on one quart of fuel.

Bought this stove for its versatility and being a liquid fueled stove works amazing at low temperatures. Used it to cook camp meal for me and my buddies opening weekend where temperatures were in the 20s. 3 guys 2 meals a day each plus coffee for 3 days and only used 25 oz of fuel. Use the bottom heat reflector. I neglected to do so and my buddies yeti decided to melt all over the stove.
