This is my nomading travel companion, not just my backcountry water treatment. Warding off microbiome disasters wherever I go; rural Mexico to remote Nepal, and everywhere in between (including sketchy airbnb tap water).

I bought this after using MSR's regular gravit flow system for years. It's great to have the self-flusing feature, instead of having to back flush the old model. Very fast.

If budget is no object - then this is the filter to buy. I also have the Sawyer Gravity system which costs 4x cheaper. Not just a mere filter, it is a also purifier - and the carbon filter is the icing on the cake and makes the filtered water pleasant tasting. Everything about the package is pure premium. MSR did not skimp on the components and it looks and feel as expensive as it actually is. Operating is easy. Long term storage is a bit tedious - it is a 1 hour procedure - but I don't mind doing to ensure tip top performance and longevity. I know some complain about the flow rate. I never measured - I mean between the claimed 2 mins to reputedly slower 2m30secs in the field .. it is rather irrelevant to me for my use. Which is base camp use where I wont be moving for days. Part of enjoying the outdoors is the being calm about everything and 10L filtered water that comes about a few mins late, is a non-issue for me. And it is really great to produce so much filtered water for camp use effortlessly AND it is supercomforting to know that it is (if the claims are to be believed) the only filter to meet military grade specifications. That seems overkill for me but then why not! Downsides : long term storage and PRICE. This filter is insanely priced.

I'm writing a second review because it does not appear that I can edit the one I wrote on 6/19/24. A couple of weeks after I posted that review, customer service staff reached out to me and agreed to send me a replacement filter. Now the new filter is installed, and I've used the Guardian Gravity Purifier for the first time, I can say that It works very well. I'm looking forward to many liters of clean water on the trail. Thank you, MSR!

I was super excited to get this water purifier, but the casing to the filter was cracked, meaning that the water drips out the side instead of going through the filter. I submitted a request for a part to repair the leak (along with pictures), and have not heard anything from customer service. Buyer beware - you might have trouble getting any support if you buy gear from MSR.

It's just a great and reliable system. Even my kids can use it. We are a family of 5 who go camping with friends and we need a lot of water often we use 70 liters on a weekend. With the gravity system we never run out of water and the system does not require attention so it's very good for camping with small kids.

After reading The Road by Cormac MacCarthy I purchased both a Guardian and a Guardian Gravity Purifier. I figure that they will either not get used much or they will save lives in the long run. That said I now only have the Guardian Purifier as my Guardian Gravity Purifier was donated by me to a disaster relief friend. Now all I need is a sale for me to be able to buy my family another one.I am glad I helped someone but now I can't afford another one. I never even got to use it.

Great filter! Just check it first before taking into the field, my dirty water bag had a defect which made it leak at the port. I was able to fix this by jerry rigging it with my dromedary bag. Good that MSR uses standard connections. I do recommend.

I purchased this filter two years ago for big group and family trips. This year my wife and I took our two kids on an 11-day trip on the Wonderland Trail around Mt. Rainer. The filter performed great, even in dried-up silty/tea-stained lakes. At first, I thought this filter was overkill - many people use squeeze bottle-style filters. Though having to make water for the four of us over 11 days, I was happy I did. Most days, I was filtering around 20 liters of water per day. We filtered into a separate 10l bladder so anyone could quickly fill the cook pot, bottle, or brush teeth. When stowed, the filter, dirty water bag, and extra balder are chunky. However, the weight is negligible once you put this into the group gear pile that gets divvied up between the party. It was consistent with other group gear items in size and weight - rainfly, first-aid kit, stove and fuel, etc. Lastly, the flow rate is brought up on this filter. The filter works great if you hang it high and routinely flush the system. At the end of each season I've owned this, I "winterize" the filter by following the disinfecting directions supplied with the filter. This extra step makes a big difference in the overall performance of the filter.

I purchased this as an alternative to iodine treated water. Our 9 person crew used this exclusively for our drinking water for 10 days. Best paired with a dromedary instead of filling directly to nalgenes.

I use this filter at our my apartment for rusty water! Anyway, it does a great job. I filter about 3 gallons every two days. Four stars only for two reasons: First, I wished the filter removed major chemicals as well. I knew it didn't when purchased, but maybe further product development will offer this improvement. Second, it does filter more slowly than anticipated no matter how much I keep the filter flushed. Slower filteringactually improves water quality, but it would be nice to have some truth in advertising...

Bought this purifier for a basecamp location with stream water in North Wales mountains. Quickly got an efficient system in place filtering 10 litres every day for next days use. This product, when used as demonstrated on the MSR website is a game changer for our camp, saving time and fuel boiling water for drinking and cooking. Used every day for 5 weeks so far. Just back in civilisation and Wifi for a few weeks so about to sterilise it.

25 days in the Grand Canyon. We settled the sediment, filtered through fiber and .5 paper filters then purified about 10-15 leters per day. Simple, predictable, easy and effective.

With the increasingly more common water issues ongoing in parts of the country, it would be a smart idea to invest in this purifier. All I can say is that I am very happy to have not just a water purifier, but this model specifically.

Very intuitive to use, although the top doesn't seal very well (which means it works best if it is hanging somewhere very high up and not moving at all). Flow is decently fast (like a pot of boiling water, it goes faster when you aren't watching it). Needs to be hung pretty high up though, which can be hard if you are vertically challenged.

I used my Gravity Filter for the first on a 2 night hike at a small alpine lake in the Olympic National Forest. It filtered the very clean, lake water well and there was absolutely no noticeable taste. The output was acceptable. There was a problem though. After testing and purging my filter system for the first time at home before the hike I dried and stored the system in its pouch per the instructions. At the lake for the first real world use I quickly found that the purge tube had been cut just below the filter while packed. Folding the purge tube 180 degrees for storage crated a severe ?pinch point? in the tubing and this is where the cut formed. This allowed water to leak constantly unless the filter was placed above the reservoir bag. I was able to stop the leak with some cloth bandage tape and that worked well enough while filtering water but I still hung the filter higher than the bag when not filtering to keep water from slowly leaking out. I am disappointed in the ?military grade? design. I think that a 90 or even 45 degree elbow for both the purge and clean water tubing is needed to safeguard against this happening. Or tougher tubing in that area. This probably happened due to being stuffed tightly in my pack. But isn?t that supposed to happen while backpacking? I guess I?ll have to more careful/gentle with it in the future.

I used this filter while in the BWCA and it worked perfectly. The flow rate was great, as we hung it at about 8ft in a tree. Would highly recommend this to someone wanting both filter and purifier.

I am sponsored by MSR and an ambassador for this years summer Away Team. I was sent a Guardian Gravity as part of my ambassadorship and thought I'd leave this review, but I'd like to point out it is in no way shaped by MSR and is my own honest opinion. At first I was a little sceptical whether I'd get much use out of the Guardian Gravity purifier as I have other filters and purifiers already in my kit. But after a few weeks of testing, I can honestly say it's changed the way I plan and enjoy my future trips. The ability to hang up and leave the Guardian means I can have a supply of water at camp rather than make multiple trips to the water source and the fast flow rate means I'm not waiting around for water to be purified. The 10L bag means I can have a supply of water alway at my camp and is handy for transporting water from the source. Great for group outings or longer solo trips, the Guardian Gravity is likely to find a place in my regular camping kit.

I used it when I went backpacking with some friends. At first I thought the 10 lt reservoir bag will be too big for the 4 of us ( plus 2 dogs) . To my surprise, we actually went thru the whole thing on the first night! It filtered water pretty fast and worked great with our 1 lt nalgene bottle but it didn't work as well with 0,5 lt bottle. We had to prop it up and it popped out occasionally . The system packed pretty small and it came with a small bag . Make sure to follow the instruction to store it properly .

NSF Protocols P231 & P248
Microorganisms in backcountry water can pose an immediate risk to your health. NSF P231 and P248 are the most rigorous scientific standards for proving a device safely removes these microbes from challenging wilderness sources. These standards confirm the device's effectiveness throughout the entire life of its filter.
All MSR filters pass P231 for removal of bacteria and protozoa, and our Guardian Purifiers are the market's only to pass the military standard P248 testing for virus removal
