These dromedary's work great for kayaking. They are easy to fit into a boat and are very durable. The small cap makes it easy to fill water bottles and the larger is great for getting water from streams

I was hesitant to get a Dromedary bladder after reading the negative comments. I have the 10L with a Thru-link inline filter set up for base camp use. The first water pass thru produced some charcoal powder but since then it has been good. There has been no bad/chemical taste. I don't know if a similar setup would help the smaller versions. I would like a larger or double sided handle at the fill opening to better grip this 10L beast when filling!

I've also been frustrated by the reports of bad taste and the lack of good advice from MSR here. With the variation in people's experience, I figured some were more sensitive to the off taste than others, but I now think there is more to it. I tried my tap water, and the taste was not good (manageable, but pretty bad). I read on another forum that chlorine in water treatment might be reacting with the liner to produce the taste, and things were much better when I used water put through a Brita filter. So, will keep testing, but this made a big difference for me, at least at first....

Recently took this bag on an off-road motorcycle trip. Worked well for so many reasons. Water sources were few and far between so I filtered with my mini works and filled the 6 liter and always had water. With it strapped to the top/back part of my bike, I could just flip the spout and rinse off the dust or fill up my drinking bottle. Not sure what the taste issue that everybody else has. Best part though; I was riding the hot, dirty, dusty trails and got to a waypoint for a rest and noticed my 6 liter bag was not on top of my bike! I was also missing a shoe! I rode back 10 miles and found the bag and my shoe in the trail. The bag was dirty but had came off my bike and didn't burst or tear. It was still in great condition. Thoroughly impressed.

I'm a fan of MSR, just bought a Habitude 4 tent that's an outstanding product in every way, delighted to get it on sale for $420, but the reviewers here are right about the dromedary: it's a definite fail. The chemical taste and odor of the water is so strong you can't mask it even by brewing dark roast coffee in it. I use mine for washing only.

Everybody here keeps complaining about taste. The taste is part of basic safety. This product would otherwise be moldy as hell, if the inside walls weren?t lined with some kind of agent. I use this bag for washing or showering, sometimes plain drinking water. I don?t cook with them, it ruins the taste of food. But that?s all normal part of the design of this product. Making this product clear would possibly allow UV light which may the have same neutralizing effect. What I really don?t like about this bag is the spout. The flow is too slow. I bought a $10 clear plastic water carrier from my local hardware store which has a simple spigot to increase/decrease water flow. The silly thing is clear and never smells or tastes bad. I am terrified to put it anywhere as not to puncture it, but otherwise it?s a more superior product to these dromedaries. Change the design of the spigots. Redesign the basic material to make them clear. People will love them.

Very durable bag and like that there are 3 ways to funnel water out of the bag. My only critique is that it SMELLS like VERY STRONG chemically-plastic. I took it on a trip and couldn't drink the water at all. I am 2 weeks in, trying to clean it with hot water & soap, still trying to get the smell out.

Durable. The plastic taste wasnt too bad. Sometimes gets stronger when water is in it for a long Time. The webbing and tieout points around it could be better designed so it keeps it shape when hanging.

I recently bought and took multiple 10L Dromedary Bags on a kayak trip down the Green and Colorado rivers. The bags were by far the best I have used in extended backpacking and kayak trips. They are perfect size and shape to store in a kayak either in holds or between seats. These were brand new bags which I rinsed slightly before use. Even so, the plastic taste was minimal after six days on the river. Much better than other containers I have used. I would assume after a few longer uses like this the taste would be very minimal if not gone. Another great use of the bags is that I found additional caps with a nipple for attaching water filter hose. Marking one bag "dirty" I can use the 10L bags with an inline water filter to purify a large quantity of water with a gravity setup. Although I had to keep the bags shaded from the sun with their dark colored exterior, I found that I could also convert one of the bags to a solar shower by leaving it out for water to warm up. The attached integral strap makes this very easy to just hang off a broken limb of a tree or by attaching rope cord. These are much more durable bags than any other provided for that purpose, which is great in Utah country with sharp rocks, debris, and thorny plants all around. Plenty of harsh opportunity on this trip for bags to fail, but I had zero issues with all 8 bags I purchased.

I love the rugged material. I feel like I don't have to worry about about damaging it as I moved them from my kayak to the shore and back.

Are all of you who are having taste problems loading your bag up with municipal tap water? I've never had a bad taste from these bags--old or new--but the only water that ever goes in them is purified water from the backcountry. I'm wondering if some chemical in treated tap water is the culprit for you all. Maybe it is the length of time you keep water in them? It is rare that the same water stays in our bag for more than a day. These bags have been perfect for me used as clean water storage as part of a homemade gravity filter system for wilderness canoe trips. I did learn that you should never use bleach in them as even very diluted, it will degrade the lining, and water will start seeping through everywhere. I'm not sure why MSR does not have a warning about this anywhere--they really should. Thankfully, customer support was awesome and honored my warranty. They advised me on a safer chem to use to sterilize these bags beyond the baking soda cleaning listed in their FAQ, bit I don't remember what it was. Again, why isn't this info more readily available, MSR? I've knocked a star off of my review for the lack of warning about use of bleach, lack of I do on alternative safe sterilization methods, and because I liked the old shape slightly better for hanging.

I had to pour out my coffee this morning after the water was in it for more than 24 hours. It's been a few used too. How can I clean this taste out?

Love the durability. Seems the older bags had additional grommets that made hanging the bags easier. When hung from a tree, I found the bag collapsing and harder to use as the water level dropped. Maybe there's a trick I just haven't learned with this design.

I am only the buyer of the product. What I've been told is the Dromedary Bags are great, fit well in a pack and are durable.

Love how durable the material of this water bag is and it packs up reasonable well. As some commenters have mentioned the 3-in-1 lid is great but can be a bit awkward to use the middle size with this bag. With the strong attaching it to the main lid it makes it challenging to get it back on when the water is flowing!

I know that plastic bladders will have a bad taste but these are especially bad. Tastes like turpentine, the "other popular brand with the blue bag" has a slightly sweeter plastic taste so it's not as bad. I wish manufacturers could just not have plastic leeching into our water, feels dangerous. Secondly, all the useful accessories seem to have been discontinued (spigot and shower attachment). The current cap is frustrating. Third, if you're going to have multiple caps, why not have a much larger cap so that these can be cleaned and dried with a hole you can get your hand into? I now you need the "Nalgene size thread" for water filters, but why not have a useful size opening? This would also help scrubbing the inside to try and get the plastic residue taste off the inside of the bag. Either way, please try to get rid of the bad taste somehow, and bring back the shower and spigot attachment please! May I also suggest a "hybrid" bag, half BLACK fabric, half clear plastic, this would allow us to also use this bag as a "sun shower" since the best kind use a clear top and black back to heat up the water.

I have two 6L Dromedaries. One is at least 10 years old, the other 5. They have carried water on bicycle touring trips, backpacking trips and on many sea kayaking trips. I have not experienced any of the "taste problems" that some reviewers report. They are great in the kayak because they conform to the hull shape and don't roll around. Unhappily the newer one has developed a leak. It started on a recent sea kayak trip and wet everything that was on the bottom of the same compartment. I thought it was the lid and bought a new one, but the leak continues. It appears to be coming from the junction between the neck and the bag. This is disappointing - US made gear has always set the category values in my view and I have come to depend on good gear. Can this be repaired?? Or should I just chuck it and look for a reliable replacement?

Really nice tough water carrier but despite repeated filling and drying, the water tastes of plastic.

I've been using the same bladder for going on 4 years now for wildland firefighting. Purchased the drinking hose adapter with it. Have had 0 issues with it from day 1 to year 4. I have not treated it well at all but it has taken all the beating I've required of it. Highly recommend as a durable water bladder.

I plan to make these into water purification systems. Is there a way to purchase the red connectors like MSR uses in a similar system?

I love attaching my Guardian purifier to this and quickly getting enough water for a day in camp. Great for car camping where water must be either brought in or filtered. I prefer filtering as it saves tons of space in my car and my littles love to throw rocks in the water while I filter. Little do they know it will soon be their job to filter the water!

I've used MSR Dromedaries for as long as I've been a wilderness guide, so around 8 years or so. I've found them to be very reliable and durable. On the older models I would sometimes get leaks from the little cap, and was able to simply replace it with the cap from an eyedrop container, our add a little tape to make the seal snug. Because of the cap size on the newest version, replacement wouldn't be as easy, though I reckon that when the time comes, a bit of tape will do just fine. While I love this product, I'm dinging it one star on my review because of the strange, almost rubbery taste that I get from the newest model. Another review suggested cleaning it out with baking soda and water, so I'll give that a try. I never had to do that with the old ones, but if it solves the problem then it's a minor nuisance. Funny taste aside, I still think it's a great product. I have three, older 6-liter bags and one of the newer 10-liter bags. These bad boys last, even if you're a bit rough on them (just, please, don't throw them - they're resilient, but are still susceptible to sharp, point things). As an added bonus, they make a pretty comfy pillow, too.

These things do what they should: carry water reliably and conveniently. They're TOUGH, yet lightweight. Problem is, I stored several of them with bleach & water solution to keep them germ free, and that destroyed the linings. Made them gooey and not waterproof, so don't use bleach in them. I doubt it would hurt them to treat water with bleach for drinking, but I won't be putting ANY bleach in them unless that's my only purification option. I store the replacement ones with about 2 oz of 60% ethyl alcohol solution in each one. Funny thing, stored for a month that way, the solution apparently evaporates through the liner and fabric, but they seem unharmed and hold water just fine, more than 7 years after I bought them and treating them this way after every trip, about 10 times a year. After the first set were ruined, I emailed MSR about it, telling them what had happened and asking them for a recommendation on how to store them... no response. At the time they had no info about how to clean and store them either in the product literature or on their website (or if it was on the website I didn't see it... and I looked), so bad on them for poor customer support back then. They have a recommendation now on this site so good on them for that.

I am a climbing and canyon guide in Zion NP. I have used the 6L Dromedary for over 4 years. I use it every single day. No exeptions! I don't like to drink out of anything else. On the cap it reads "Wash after each use" What if I never stop using it??? I read reviews about a bad taste. Growing up with good well water in WA I consider myself a water snob, I have never noticed an unfavorable taste. Once while on a very remote desert trip I accidentally dropped my completly full Drom off a 40...

When you need nearly-indestructible water storage solution for all your expeditions and journeys into hostile terrains, there is nothing better than MSR's Dromedary bags. Abrasion-resistant 1,000D fabric protects from scuffs, scrapes, and drops, and the interior food-grade polyurethane can handle freezing cold conditions and boiling hot water equally well. Webbing on the exterior of the Dromedary bag makes it easy to hang or carry around. For a bomb-proof water storage solution that's as durable and resilient as the environment you're taking it to, the Dromedary bags will be your favorite way to carry your H2O.
