Great Pan

Love the pan, I used it on an 89 day paddling trip through BC, Canada, works great on stoves and on camp fires, only issue was I lost the handle two months in and from then on I had to use my t-shirt to get it out of the fire. Would love a version where the handle can get disconnected from the pan, otherwise great, would recommend

Excellent, could be even more excellent

This pan seems to have a pretty ideal balance of size, weight, durability, and even heat. The pour spout is a nice touch. As others have noted, it lacks a folding handle, which is a puzzling oversight. I made a folding handle for it. MSR appears to use 9/64" d rod stock, which I couldn't find, so I used 5/32". This required some modification of the bracket and sliding lock, but it's all manageable. Drill holes in the bracket 1/4" above the bottom for the pivot. You end up with a taller handle kind of like a French poele, so I also made the handle 7" long for tossing food. The 1.6L stowaway pot nests pretty well in it, and a small deepdish plate and GSI glacier kettle (with minor modification) will nest tightly inside the pot. The whole is held together with an arno strap through the pot handle and the bracket and handle of the frying pan. It makes a nifty gourmet cook set! A man can dream, but if the stowaway pot was designed to nest in the skillet, had an aluminum bottom plate, and had a recessed "dutch oven" lid that also fit the skillet, pretty much all of the camp gourmet bases would be covered.

Great pan, with one flaw: handle needs to re-attach in reverse for storage and transport

MSR, I love this great pan, which recently made quick work of a small bass one of my kids caught on our latest trip. One flaw: With the handle separated from the pan for transport or storage, it can easily go missing, bang around, etc. It must be managed. The solution is easy: redesign so that the handle can be remounted for storage flush with the bottom of the pan. Either make the vertical section 7/8-in longer, or move the anchor point down to the midpoint of the side of the pan and make the handle vertical just long enough that it can flip both ways, so that it can be reattached in reverse, flush with the bottom of the unit, and locked there with the sliding lock. No more handle tracking required, or ditty bagging, or clanking, or seasoning ruination, or whatever. I'm going to try to find suitable rod to custom-build a replacement handle, unless you'd be kind enough to send me one after a redesign!

I love that the handle

I love that the handle easily removes. Heat conduction through the pan is excellent. With caution placed on how high the heat is, cooking eggs, bacon, and even pancakes come out perfect. I carry mine with a Pathfinder large and small bushpots that fit perfectly in a black waxed canvas bag.

Handy Stove

I bought this on a whim and happy with it. Was surprised the handle didn't get hot when cooking and it also cleans up really well. The shape is an awkward fit with my other gear but cooked up mushrooms and chorizo perfectly.

Good pan, but I need a handle!

I love this pan, I always take it when I go cycling and/or camping. But pleeease help me. I lost the handle while moving house. Can't find anywhere, not even online, where I can buy just the handle. I'm in the Netherlands.

Over 15 years and still my best pan

I like to cook real, whole food whenever I can while camping. The thicker bottom of the Alpine Fry Pan heats evenly and works very well to sauté and fry without hot-spots or burning. Food releases nicely, and the pan cleans easily. This pan nests inside my other MSR sets along with the stainless plates. I have used it extensively since I received it as a gift over 15 years ago. It seems like I have always owned it. I have been in search of a new handle since the original was left behind on a rocky beach. Where can I find one?

Good Pan

Well built, lightweight and cleans easy. Just wish the handle folded rather than detached.

Almost perfect.

The best fry pan available for back packing and perfect for frying up little Brook trout. If it were another inch in diameter it would be even better.

Dispersed heat. Sold handle.

This thing is great for car camping or short backpacking trips when weight is not really an issue. It's heavier, but it's also more effective at dispersing heat than every other camping pan, so you get an even temperature across the pan. Whereas most lightweight camping pans/pots heat in the middle right above the flame and require constant stirring. The handle is removable and super solid when it's attached. For backpacking trips, I nest this under my MSR Alpine Pot set inside the mesh carrying bag, so it all fits nice and snug.

The perfect frying pan

I've fried countless steaks, eggs and whatever else on this pan and use it almost every day. Camping or at home. I treat it like a cast iron pan and rarely wash it opting to just heat some water to boiling and letting that loosen whatever is stuck on, which usually isn't very much. It's a perfect match for the Trangia Triangle alcohol stove. The bloom from the stove widens to the same size as the aluminum base on the pan, heating it perfectly. Whatever space/ weight penalty this pan costs. it makes up for in functionality.

Excellent skillet to compliment the Alpine Cookset

Good size for a small group frying pancakes, bacon, trout, etc. A little heavy for backpacking but works great for Winter trips with a pulk or wilderness canoe trips. The removable handle is a real benefit for storing and transport.

LOVE this pan!!!

we have the MSR 4piece set, which has a (kinda) frying pan, but I remember from years ago a friend had this one. It fits snugly on the outside of the set, and in the pouch! We took it out last weekend and beat the snot out of it! scorched pancakes, burnt apple cobbler, butter on too long.. it rocked! now it has those trail scars all over it, but works like a champ!.. distributes the heat evenly, the handle locks in place, but comes off for washing and/or packing (don't lose it!).. this pan ROCKS!!!

Very good little pan

Great compact pan. Handle is removable and easy to use. It does cook fine, seats well on stove and surprisingly has a lot of volume to it for cooking. The wall are a little high for the diameter but actually it is a good thing for cooking. Maybe not the lightest but very convenient. I gave 4 stars because I wish it come with a lid.

Quality.

Another quality piece of camping kit by MSR. Will last years. Nests easily with MSR pots. I prefer steel over alumnium and titanium. Someone left a comment about the handle being unstable. All you do is push the bracket forward and it stays in place secure. The handle stores easily also, when not in use.

A great product

The frying pan is sensational. It is permanent. The most important thing - the aluminum lower disc means that food does not burn. I miss the pot with an aluminum bottom disk in the offer. I would be happy to use such a pot with a capacity of 2L, 3L. Example 1 - Alpine ™ Stowaway Pots + aluminum bottom disc. Example 2 - Alpine ™ 2 Pot Set + aluminum bottom disc.

An OLD friend.

I think I must have bought this 20 some years ago. I can not remember for sure. I do remember paying $8 for it so that says something about it's age. I camp about two months total a year and NEVER go without this pan. It has helped prepare food for large groups and sometimes for just me. I banged it around pretty good over the years and accidentally turned a few meals into charcoal. A little gravel or sand and it's good to go again. I have not "lost" the handle and those that consider the detachable handle a "con" might consider looking at themselves instead of the pan. I have a pot that it makes a perfect lid for so the two of them are the backbone of my kitchen. Sorry for being long winded about this but I ran across the advertisement for it and was kind of shocked to see they are still around. I would buy another but there is nothing wrong with the one I already have.

Does what it says

This frying pan heats really evenly which is awesome. The only downside I've found is that it doesn't float... gonna need another one already

Simple and usefull

The alpine fry pan is the best portable frying pan I have found. It is light enough to hike with and just the right size. Pros: - Small enough to pack, large enough to handle good sized pan fish. - the pour spout is super usefull - the aluminum base helps get the pan hot super fast Cons: - The handle is detachable but not foldable, it would be nice if you could reattach it upside down for storage - being stainless steel you have to be careful to curate and protect a seasoning on the pan or it is useless for frying

Great Cooking Time

Cooks and cleans like a dream and leaves little to be desired out of a backpacking pan! My only real issue with it being that I find it doesn't balance on my Whisperlite, but sits at a slight angle.

My most often used piece of camping cookware. I would never camp without it as it distributes the heat well and the side walls are just perfect height.
