Review Summary

I bought my 1040 about a month and have used it on approximately 6 short rides around the neighborhood and at a nearby forest preserve. I am extremely happy that I chose the larger screen and didn't get the 840. I'm a purely recreational cyclist, so I really don't need all the training features of the 1040, but I wanted to get the Varia Bike Radar and wanted the largest screen available. Both the 1040 and the Varia have been amazing. The Varia picks up an approaching car 350+ feet behind me. The warning beep from the 1040 is sufficiently loud that I hear it, even if it is windy. The 1040 display clearly shows any approaching vehicles (cars, trucks, bikes, etc.) I won't ride without it. I watched a number of YouTube videos (DCRainmaker, GPLama, etc.) before deciding on the 1040. GPLama has several excellent videos on how to setup the 1040 and has recommendations on several IQ datafields to install to enhance the capabilities.

I ride with my Garmin Edge 1040 3 times a week for about 60 miles. It is great for tracking my performance stats, like personal records. It is coupled with my Garmin Varia RCT715 Radar which warns me about the traffic behind.

Some of the banners are hard to read and it keeps dropping the connection to various sensors, like speed, cadence, HRM, power. But they reconnect after a few seconds.

Huge step up from my Edge 520. The touchscreen is accurate even with wet hands. So many display configurations to fit your needs and an easy swipe to next display. Map is large enough to read safely while riding.

I am still learning all of the options and settings, but I am quite satisfied with my current experience. I am especially pleased to have reliable connections to my sensors and Varia. Now, I can't imagine cycling without it.

We previously had an Edge 1000. This has so many features and connects automatically to our HR monitor, radar and iPhone. It is customizable and the battery is greatly improved. Expensive, but I feel it is worth every dollar!

The 1040 puts all the information that is relevant to my cycling at my fingertips. It seamlessly downloads to the app to give a more comprehensive view. The one feature I would improve is the switching between cycling disciplines, not intuitive.

It is so far working great. I used to use my Forerunner 945 for tracking my cycling activities but this edge is perfect size making it much safer. Battery life is good. For some reason WiFi sync does not work for some reason but I believe it does not work while connected to phone. Not a biggy

I've owned my Edge 1000 since 2015 and enjoyed it. It finally died last month so Garmin gave me a trade-in discount. The device has been a blissful change. I love the new gui and the summary. Definitely light years ahead my my 1000. I'm a dedicated and loyal Garmin customer and enjoy their devices and GC app. Great job, Garmin. You always are world class.

A friend has the Edge1040 Solar and loves it so I ordered a non solar one on a great sale from Western Bikeworks. I am 75 and fairly computer savvy but without my friend I would never have figured this thing out. I bought a Garmin heart monitor thinking it would be easiest to connect. My friend had to play with it to get it to work but now it is fine. My latest problem is getting it to consistently load my rides to Strava. Sometimes it will and today it waited for several hours and suddenly it loaded. I love all the data. One possible danger is I spend so much time looking at all those numbers that I may run into a post or something. I think I will grow to love it but it is just more than I am used to, having ridden with just a cycle computer all these years. Also, you should order one of the color wraps to protect it from dropping. They have an assortment of colors.

I bought this a few weeks ago. Still getting used to all of the features. It's much more technically advanced than I am. I really didn't put much time into it yet, I enjoy the workouts. Hoping to get a power meter soon so I can take full advantage

I recently purchased the Edge 1040 after having used a Wahoo Element Roam. I really like the Garmin and have had no issues. But, it is not as intuitive to use as the Wahoo and I felt the intro info was not as helpful as it could be.

I had been happy with my Garmin 830, and really thought the added screen space was unnecessary. After seeing 1040 on a couple of my cycling friends, I decided to try rather than 840. The experience is beyond what I expected , especially the Climb Pro feature much more readable!

I have done about 10 rides so far and the computer itself is fine but getting use to the differences from the 1030 have been difficult. At the start of every ride when I calibrate my power meter the computer always registers 1863 on my power and average power. I do everything as before with my 1030 and I also try to delete the ride to get rid of that number but it is always there. It stinks since it affects my power numbers for the entire ride. That is just one of the many small annoying differences from the 1030 to the 1040. I just feel the 1030 was a little more intuitive to use and less complicated.

I have had the 1040 for a little over a month and it's traveled about 150ish miles. The 1040 is very user friendly and intuitive. It easily sinks with my HR, Cadence and speed sensors. I do enjoy the larger screen as compared to the 840 and it does not have too much glare. I was concerned about glare from some online reviews I viewed, but it's extremely easy to see and does well in low light or bright sun. I would say the one drawback is the hill assist as it is usually delayed, in that I am already climbing the hill, then it tells me there is a hill ahead. Once on the climb it does well with gradients and it also delays in telling you the hill is completed. But I know I'm done. The Battery has not been charged since my initial out of the box 100% charge. Unit is currently at 60% power. That's after approximately 15 hours of use to include riding and a few hours of dorking around with it getting used to all the submenus and initial setup. Additionally, it is very fast to turn on and ready to use. I ride with guys using wahoo and hammerheads and I'm ready to go and they are still booting up. Secondly, if a ride is changed. It's an easy fix. Just pull off of ride with GPS export as a GPX file and then Bluetooth to the 1040. I can have a whole new route uploaded in under 30 seconds. All in all I'm pleased with this purchase.

Due to cataracts and aging eyes this unit is perfect. I am still getting used to all that it can do but it is so easy to read. Love the very responsive touch screen. Love the functionality. Had a 520 Plus so this is major upgrade and no comparison to older units. The text size was an easy sell for me! Very pleased with entire unit. Pairs with Varia radar really well.

I have had a 1030 for say 10 years, and finally upgraded. This is a nicer unit, much faster and with a much better screen and speaker, I can actually hear it after many years of silence due to declined hearing. I pair it with my Radars, works very well. Great maps and climbs built into the maps.

I have had this less than a month, and March has not been much of a month for riding. But I love it. I can read the display (size is helpful for these old eyes). The 820 was just too small, and I think, lower contrast. Could have saved with the downsized 1040 (the 840) but size matters. It also responds to my touch; the 820 did too after several frustrating tries. Cannot wait to try some of the new features. It has so many, that I will surely seldom or never use a number of them (hill climbing is southern Delaware?) but already I am fully satisfied with the purchase.

This is my first bike computer after using my iPhone as a (rudimentary) bike computer for some time. I love the edge 1040 and how well it seamlessly synced to my cadence/speed/power/heart sensors. I also use it on my wahookickr v6 and it synced to everything there perfectly as well. I haven't tried the navigation yet on some routes I've downloaded, but I'm looking forward to it.

Received a few weeks ago, used on 8 or so rides. The device works great, paired immediately with my bike components (power crank, shifters, derailluer) and my Garmin 515 radar unit (also new with the Edge). The only glitch was on 1 occasion I couldn't get the device to turn on, but as soon as I returned home it worked with out issues, and no issues since.
