Enjoying the outdoors means being exposed to all kinds of weather, from searing heat and chattering cold to balmy breezes and horizontal rain. Severe weather can be a stunning and powerful thing to witness but, you should know how to stay safe when out camping in bad weather.

Travel with a weather alert radio or, if you’re not in too remote an area, keep an eye on the skies via your cell phone or computer. If storms move in, don’t shelter in your car, camper, or tent. Instead, get inside a sturdy building. If there’s nothing like that around, try to find a sheltered area away from trees. If your car is your last resort, park away from trees, which could be knocked down onto your vehicle.

While potentially dangerous, severe weather can be quite beautiful when viewed from a distance, as seen in this video. Shot over the course of 18 days and 20,000 miles, photographer and storm chaser Mike Olbinski traveled across nine states between April and June to capture this amazing timelapse footage of welling storm clouds and volatile funnel formation. If conditions like these arise while you’re out camping, take cover.
