Although it’s difficult to crown a winner in such a vast group of outdoor destinations, one that certainly deserves mention is Pedernales Falls State Park. Pedernales Falls is located in the heart of Texas, just east of Johnson City.

The beautiful Pedernales River snakes all around this lovely park, and virtually any kind of outdoor activity is available. Visitors to the Pedernales Falls Park will find abundant campsites with running water and electricity. In addition to these sites, they also have more primitive campsites available. There are numerous trails geared toward hiking and backpacking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, and many are suitable for families with younger children. Wildlife is everywhere in this region, and birdwatchers especially will delight in the park’s more than 150 species of birds.
