Reusable water bottles keep excess waste out of landfills while offering consumers an inexpensive alternative to bottled water and juice. What happens when these reusable bottles get dirty? Do you know how to clean them?

Once you’ve chosen a reusable bottle, it is crucial to keep it clean. Cleaning a water bottle on a consistent basis prevents bacteria and germs from forming. No one wants to jeopardize their health by drinking tainted beverages out of a dirty bottle.

It is important to store your bottle correctly. Never leave it half-full or dirty for an extended period of time–this is especially important for people who live in warm and humid environments.Always remind yourself that reusable bottles need to be cleaned just like other dishes in your home. Would you ever drink out of a glass that had juice sitting in it for a couple of days? It is important to take your bottle home and clean it at least once a week.

Step One

Most newer bottles unscrew so you can easily reach inside of them; these are the easiest to clean. Some bottles are too narrow to fit your fingers inside. These bottles require a brush or utensil to clean the hard to reach areas, which is easy enough to find in just about any grocery store. Make sure to always clean the bottom, corners, and the inside of the lid, as these areas tend to harbor the most bacteria.

Step Two

When cleaning a water bottle, use soap and warm water. If you look at the bottom of your bottle, it may say that it is dishwasher safe. If it says this, you can throw it in the dishwasher with the rest of your dishes. Always be careful and check to make sure it is dishwasher safe; plastic bottles can melt and deform in the dishwasher.

Step Three

Make sure that your bottle is dry before you store it. Damp bottles get moldy and they harbor bacteria. If you are washing a bottle and then storing it while it is wet, you aren’t cleaning it effectively. After washing it, go over it with a clean paper towel or cloth to soak up any excess moisture; after you have wiped it down, let it sit out and air dry before you put it away.
