The humble pie iron is a versatile cooking tool that any avid camper should own, and outside of being relatively inexpensive, they are incredibly easy to use and the sky is the limit when it comes to sweet or savory recipes. Here are a few pie iron recipes for camping that will wow your entire camp any time of day!
Chicken Pot Pie
You’ll need:
Can of chunky chicken and vegetable soup or stew- Tube of ready-to-bake rolls
- Salt, pepper, and other seasonings
- Cooking spray
Spray both sides of pie iron with cooking spray, and place one piece of roll dough in each side, pressing it out with your fingers to cover the whole surface to the edges. Spoon 2-3 spoonfuls of the soup or stew into the bottom iron, and season to your preference. Close the top iron over the bottom one, latch securely, and place it in the coals of a campfire. Let each side cook a few minutes, checking after you flip it but before you replace it in the coals to check your cooking progress. Once ready, simply open the pie iron and slide your chicken pot pie out onto a plate. Let cool, and bon apetit!
Monte Cristo
You’ll need:
Sliced bread- Sliced deli ham and turkey
- Sliced cheese
- Eggs
- Milk
- Cooking spray
- Fruit preserves or syrup
- Powdered sugar (optional)
Mix a few eggs and a small amount of milk (you can use nut milk or other alternatives if desired) with a fork in a bowl, and dredge two slices of bread through the mix. Spray both sides of your pie iron with cooking spray, and press a slice of the prepared bread into each side. Add your sliced meats and cheese next, and close and latch the pie iron. Let each side cook in the coals of your campfire for a few minutes, then pull the iron out of the fire and slide onto a plate. Dust with powdered sugar, spread a little preserves or syrup on top, and dig in!
DIY Pop Tarts
You’ll need:
This might be the easiest sweet treat of them all, and who doesn’t love Pop Tarts? But why settle for the store bought variety when you can make your own delicious gourmet creation? Simply spray each side of the pie iron with cooking spray and press a piece of pie crust dough into each side up to the edges. Add your filling, close it up, and let it bake for a few minutes on each side in your campfire coals. Remove it from the coals, slip onto a paper plate, and after cooling for a couple minutes, you’ll enjoy a delectable pie iron treat that’s better than a toaster pastry by a mile!
