It’s National Cookie Day, and we can’t imagine a better way to celebrate than by making cookies over a campfire! If you think that sounds crazy, it’s not as difficult as you may think. Grab some store-bought dough or whip up some of your own and bring it out to the fire!

A fire that’s died down to a glowing set of coals is the best type to make cookies over the campfire. You’ll want it to be about the same intensity as for roasting marshmallows or to use a dutch oven. Once it gets to this level, distribute the coals evenly to create a surface for your pan.

Skillet cookie ingredients:

  • Skillet with lid, griddle, or sheet pan
  • Aluminum foil
  • Spatula
  • Cookie dough
  • Non-stick cooking spray

Skillet cookie directions:

  1. Prepare the pan & add the cookie dough

Coat the surface of your skillet or pan with non-stick cooking spray and add small scoops of dough, leaving enough space between them to expand. If using a skillet with lid, you can simply cover the pan and place it over the coals for 7-10 minutes.

  2. Make a DIY aluminum foil lid

If using a griddle, sheet pan, or skillet without a lid, you’ll need to create one from the aluminum foil. Tear off a piece of aluminum foil twice as big as your pan, and fold the edges around the pan so that there is a layer of space between the pan and the foil. Be sure to leave a spot where you can lift the lid with tongs to check the cookies’ progress.

  3. Bake for 7-10 minutes

How long they take to bake will ultimately depend on how hot your coals are, but 7-10 minutes is a typical range.

Cookies over the campfire is an awesome treat to share with friends while camping or in the backyard, plus they aren’t as basic as s’mores! We hope you have a scrumptious National Cookie Day!
