Accessible and enjoyable hikes near major urban areas are few and far between, but the Runyon Canyon hike proves to be a favorite local destination for many Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Valley residents. Taking in factors of accessibility, trail quality and views, Runyon Canyon is an excellent choice for locals and visitors alike.
Runyon Canyon is an open space area located just off of Hollywood Boulevard and offers a moderate 3 mile loop for people to enjoy. The trails are both paved and unpaved are kept in excellent condition, and are largely litter free despite heavy use. The main trails skirt the west and east ridges of the canyon, and a fire road can also be utilized that descends through the middle of the canyon. The western trail is steeper than the eastern, so many people choose to ascend that side and descend on the east. In addition, the eastern side has stairs built into the trail on the steepest parts. The canyon is very dog friendly and includes several sections that do not require a leash.
The Runyon Canyon hike offers changing and panoramic views of the ocean, the Los Angeles Basin, including downtown and the Hollywood Sign, and has a number of benches perfect for resting the legs and taking in the sights. It is a highly traveled area, and many people enjoy it not only for the exercise but for the people watching as well. Sunrises and sunsets are a favorite from Runyon Canyon, and the trails offer stunning vantages for the enjoying the city lights at night. A few sites of historical note are in the area, including the old Outpost Sign and several homes built by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Parking is at a premium in the neighborhood, and permit only in many locations, so be aware before parking and risking a ticket. Further, Runyon Canyon is open daily from dawn until dusk, so if you manage to park in their lot, be out before dusk or your car may be locked in the lot. The surrounding neighborhoods offer many good brunch spots, and visitors and locals alike enjoy making a long morning of the Runyon Canyon hike followed up by a delicious brunch.
