Camp meals are often comprised of plenty of meats and starches, but it’s always refreshing to add a bit of sweetness to that roundup by using nature’s candy: fruit. While an apple, banana, or orange will certainly make a satisfying and healthy snack on its own, there’s no reason you can’t shake things up a bit when using fruit for dessert. Fruits are fantastic for outdoor cooking even as a standalone, like grilled pineapple and avocados. But when it comes time for after-dinner delights, turn up the heat on these fruits with a few accompaniments and watch the drool start rolling. Here are a few of our favorites to get you started!

Apple Decadence

1 apple per person

raisins

chopped walnuts

brown sugar

butter

Place each apple on a square of aluminum foil that is large enough to wrap around it, and core, leaving a large enough space to fill with an even mixture of raisins, walnuts, and brown sugar. Top each with a generous pat of butter, and wrap in the foil, taking care to keep the apple right side up. Place over coals, and cook for 20 minutes. Unwrap and allow to cool 5-10 minutes before eating.

Chocolate Strawberry Kisses

whole strawberries, cored ahead of time

bag of chocolate kisses

Fill each strawberry with a chocolate kiss — don’t worry if it doesn’t fit all the way. Shape a boat out of aluminum foil, and line the strawberries up inside the boat. Place on a grate or rack over a campfire, and cook until chocolate is melted and gooey. Allow to cool a few minutes before popping them in your mouth, as the chocolate will be very hot!

Hot Banana Split

bananas

sliced strawberries

crushed pineapple

mini marshmallows

chocolate chips

chopped nuts of your choice

Place each banana, still in its peel, on a piece of aluminum foil big enough to wrap around it completely. Carefully score the banana lengthwise from top to bottom and pull apart slightly, not enough to split it entirely. Layer strawberries, crushed pineapple, and chocolate chips inside the banana, and top with a layer of mini marshmallows. Seal the aluminum foil around the banana and place on hot coals for 10 minutes. Carefully open the foil, allow to cool for a couple minutes, and sprinkle with nuts. Don’t forget to grab a spoon!
