There can be no better combination on Earth: languishing in a volcanic hot spring as you survey the vast mountain and snowscapes that surround you. If this sounds like a dream come true, you can open your eyes in Hokkaido, Japan, and see quite literally what we’ve just described. Because Japan is situated on the infamous Pacific Ring of Fire, a large number of the area’s volcanoes remain quite active, which leads to prolific levels of hot springs, sulfur steam vents, and other volcanic features.
