This is the third of a 5-part series on disaster preparedness and how you can formulate your own plan. Check out yesterday’s post to get caught up.

If you’re focusing on planning to bug out rather than bug in, you’ll need to assemble a bug out bag. A bug out bag, as we discussed in a previous post, will carry your only supplies for survival in the event you need to leave your home permanently. While enough food and water for at least 72 hours is the rule of thumb, every other item in your bug out bag should be carefully considered in terms of your survival.

That means shelter-building materials and tools, water purification implements, firestarters, signaling devices, and first aid should be your primary concerns when building your bug out bag. If you take daily medications, be sure you have a large enough supply for several days or weeks, and a backup plan if/when they run out.

This infographic breaks down what the contents of your bag should ideally be, and some important information that relates to specific types of disaster or emergency situations. Be sure to check back for the next installment of our series on disaster preparedness to learn where and how to bug out.
