blue whaleBefore harpoon hunting was banned in 1966, blue whales were chased down almost to the point of extinction. Thanks to both the laws protecting the whale as well as ecology programs that have led to an increase in their food source, blue whale populations are growing again. Where there were once about 350,000, today there are an estimated 3-4,000 of the species in the Northern Hemisphere, and between 5-10,000 in the Southern Hemisphere.

While broadcasting their Big Blue Live special, BBC One film crews were astounded when a blue whale breached the surface not far from their boat. During a live interview with a Moss Bay, California whale watching expert, the extremely rare creature popped to the surface within sight of the crew’s helicopter. Watch, and feel, the excitement of host Steve Backshall as the reality of what is happening sinks in.
