foilWhether you choose to use ready-made fire starters or to make your own from simple household materials, it is important that your fire starter burn long enough for you to get a fire going, or if you’re using it as your heat source, burn long enough for you to boil water, warm your hands, or whatever activity you need it for. These fire starters are an important item to keep in your everyday carry (EDC) or survival kit, because you just never know when you’re going to need to get a fire started, and fast.

Sometimes conditions can present a challenge to getting a fire started, even if you have your trusty fire starters. To get the most burn time out of your fire starters, be sure you have a piece of aluminum foil packed away in your kit, or just in your pocket. Aluminum foil has been proven to increase the burn time of fire starters by as much as 60 percent, which can make all the difference when you’re having difficulty getting a fire going. Check out this video experiment that compares the burn time of fire starters on the ground and on aluminum foil. The efficiency shown here will make it seem foolish not to have a piece of foil on you when you’re adventuring in the wild!
