Illinois may be best known for the bustling metropolis that is Chicago. Few people know that the southern part of the state is actually rich with natural landscapes. These landscapes primarily cater to hikers, campers, and other sorts of outdoor enthusiasts. One place of interest is aptly named Little Grand Canyon, a box canyon that has been carved through the lush Shawnee National Forest by erosive forces for thousands of years.

In it is the Little Grand Canyon Trail, a 3.6 mile loop that takes visitors through elevation changes of more than 350 feet to panoramic views of the Big Muddy River and the vast forest of oaks and hickories below the highest vantage point. Adventurers will be treated to interesting geological formations and plenty of wildlife sightings along a trail that is feasible for kids and adults alike.

As you can see, there’s a lot more to Illinois than Kanye West and cornfields. So next time you’re feeling adventurous, skip Little Rock and head straight to the Little Grand Canyon!
