Decades ago, fur coats and stoles were all the rage for the fashion elite. One of the most sought after pelts around, as trendy as mink and sable, was the ermine. While they were once reserved for royalty and only the most elite society dames, ermines are a member of the weasel family. The tiny, adorable ermine is found predominantly in the Northern US and Alaska, as well as Canada, Greenland, and northern Europe.

They are small but can be quite ferocious. While not harmful to humans, these swift and silent hunters can squeeze into narrow spaces in pursuit of their prey. They prefer to dine on mice, shrews, and other small rodents, but will also eat birds and eggs.

Take a peek at this tiny terror that a hunter encountered in the forest. This is a rare sight, as ermine are nocturnal as well as shy around humans. It may look like a tiny hand puppet but it’s the real deal!
