Unless you have access to a camper with built in beds, adequate protection from the elements and getting plenty of quality sleep are essential to a great camping trip and can make or break an experience. The most popular types of beds for camping are inflatable mattresses and foam pads, and although both have their attributes, selection is ultimately based on personal preference and on the type of camping you’ll be doing.
Three main considerations for determining what type of sleeping pads for camping will suit individual needs are how easy they are to use, pack, and transport, how much insulation they provide from the cold and the elements, and how much comfort or cushioning they offer on hard and uneven surfaces.
A camping bed needs to be small enough for easy packing and to fit within the confines of a tent, yet big enough for a person to lie comfortably. Insulation is based on a number of factors that affect the R-value (the measure of a material’s thermal resistance) of the pad or how well they resist heat flow. A higher R-value equates to more insulation from cold or less heat loss. Cushioning depends on the thickness of the pad and the type and quality of the materials used in manufacturing.
Inflatable beds can be either self-inflatable, or require a battery operated pump or manual inflation. They are usually quite comfortable, have a high R-value, and most are waterproof and airtight. Some even have an inner core that combines air and foam, and they can be adjusted in terms of firmness. However, they may be a little heavier and more expensive than other options. Inflatable beds are also more prone to damage, which makes them suited for camping in less rugged or extreme conditions, although a self-repair kit is usually provided.

Foam sleeping pads for camping are made from a dense material that contains small air pockets or cells that inhibit air circulation, which improves their R-value. They are generally inexpensive, extremely durable and long-lasting, lightweight, waterproof, and may be purchased to accommodate any body size. They may not be as comfortable as air-based pads, but are typically much less bulky to pack, and can be used for most types of camping.
Whichever type of bed you choose, be sure to snuggle up and get some good rest while you’re enjoying the great outdoors!
