The wilderness is a dangerous place, and anyone who is stranded there or afraid that they might be needs to take stock of their advantages and their resources. When looking to see what is available, being aware of the survival uses for a bootlace can be amazingly important.

1. Snare

A bootlace can be knotted into a noose and hung over a rabbit run. This is something that can be used in situations where hunting and trapping are necessary to gain food. The rabbit runs into the noose and strangles itself, making collection and processing simple.

2. Lanyard

When carrying equipment, do not forget that things can be carried around the neck. This is ideal for small items that might fall out of pockets, like compasses, keys and knives. Simply knot the bootlace into a circle and throw it around the neck. A bootlace is typically made of synthetic materials, preventing mildew and rot from breaking the lanyard after extended wear.

3. Fire Bow

A fire bow aids in the creation of fire when fire-starters like matches and steel and flint sets are not available. A fire bow is made easily from a notched stick and a sturdy cord, and the bootlace is an ideal candidate, helping the stick twirl and start a fire.

4. Tarp Tie-Down

Sometimes, it is essential that things be kept dry, and a tarp is the natural choice. However, in windy conditions, a tarp is apt to go flying. Therefore it must be tied down, and a bootlace steps up as a natural choice. Bootlaces even have ends banded in plastic which make it easy to thread them through the tarp, after which it is possible to lash the tarp to a root or tree.

5. Knife Handle Wrap

Some survivalists can create a knife from a piece of flint or other metamorphic stone, but though these knives are sharp, they are not necessarily safe to hold. Wrap bootlace around the knife’s handle to ensure that it is safe for the user.

When looking for survival uses for a bootlace, consider the five above. They can save a life when things get tough!
