Any avid camper or hiker likely has an old sleeping bag stowed away in the attic or garage. They tear, wear, or just get too stinky eventually. But don’t send that old bag to the landfill!

Here are eight ways to reuse a sleeping bag that are simple and eco-friendly.

1. Make a dog bed

Fido won’t mind a little mustiness, but shake out and, if possible, wash the bag first. Fold the bag into the shape you want, then sew it in place using heavy quilting thread. You could even make a quick, no-sew cover that can be removed for laundering as needed.

2. Make a quilt

Use the inside stuffing of the sleeping bag to fill a new quilt. If it’s in good condition, you can use the sleeping bag fabric for the underside of your quilt.

3. Make a seat cushion

You can cut to the desired size and sew with heavy thread, or fold over and sew the edges in place. Along the same lines, you can make small throw pillows, or use squares of the sleeping bag as filling stuffed into a new cover.

4. Make a rag rug

Fido won’t mind a little mustiness, but shake out and, if possible, wash the bag first. Fold the bag into the shape you Slice your sleeping bag into strips and braid together in the traditional fashion.

5. Pass the bag along to the kids

Let them use the fabric to make clothing, bedding, or rugs for their dolls.

6. How about some wall art?

A portion of a colorful or interesting patterned sleeping bag can be framed and hung. A great accessory for the cabin!

7. Contact manufacturer about policies

Some companies will take them in to be recycled or reused, or to conduct their own product research.

8. Donate to local organization

It could be an animal shelter or, with bags in good condition, to local youth groups that have outdoor programs.

With these eight ways to reuse a sleeping bag, you’ll rest a little easier and free up some storage space at home.
