In a survival scenario, you never know what kind of household item that’s probably cluttering up your garage will be of the most value. Tarps are a great item to keep around for their ability to compress down into a small package but still offer multiple uses in the event you have to make the most of minimal supplies and tools. Even the color of your tarp could help get attention when you’re lost. It can also camouflage a campsite when trying to stay hidden. Here are just five simple uses for a tarp that demonstrate its value in a survival situation.

1. Rain Cover

A plastic tarp makes an excellent rain cover for anything you don’t want to get wet while camping. Set up a tarp over a tent to provide additional coverage during a storm or over a wood pile to keep firewood dry.

2. Shelter

Large tarps also make good survival shelters. You can easily set up a makeshift pup tent with a tarp and a bit of cordage. It will protect against the elements and help retain some heat. It is important to remember that plastic tarps do not breathe like tent fabric, so be sure to leave an opening in the shelter to let fresh air in.

3. Ground Cover

Spread a tarp on the ground to serve as a ground cover. This layer of plastic can protect against water and insects. Use it under a tent or lay it out to provide a place to sit.

4. Water Collector

In a survival situation, collecting drinkable water may be the most important task at hand. You can use a tarp to gather condensation that forms on the ground overnight, or hang it with the sides suspended to serve as a rainwater collector in inclement weather.

5. Makeshift Container

When carrying something or someone is vital, the tarp serves as a makeshift container, in which you can wrap your belongings and carry across your back or torso while trekking. You can also use it to drag firewood back to your camp or even an injured person toward safety if necessary.
