There are many different types of animals native to the Amazon rainforest that are classified as endangered. Out of the 1,721 different species of birds identified by preservation organizations, 151 are classified as high risk for extinction in this area, and endangered birds make up 40 species of that number. These five endangered birds are some of the most critically endangered of the bunch.
Purple-Winged Ground-Dove
The purple-winged ground-dove, or Claravis geoffroyi, population is steadily decreasing due to the rapid disappearance of bamboo in the rainforest. This provides this bird with shelter and food through the seeds. Males are a white color with a few dark purple bands on the wings. Meanwhile, females are a brown color with lighter purple bands on their wings.
Hyacinth Macaw
Also known as Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus, the Hyacinth Macaw is bird species that is endangered mainly due to illegal trapping and trade. This bird is bright blue with yellow coloring around the eyes and lower beak area. While young, they have shorter tails and the yellow is pale.
Red-Browed Amazon
Another beautiful yet highly endangered bird is the Red-browed Amazon, or Amazona rhodocorytha. It is bright green with a red crown, and the rest of the rainbow splashes between the eyes, nostrils, throat, and cheeks. This bird is now very rare in the rainforest.
Banded Cotinga
The Cotinga maculata, or Banded Cotinga, species are a fourth group facing extinction. Males are a bright cobalt blue color on most of the upper body and they have splashes of black all over with a bright purple color that runs from the throat to the middle belly section. Females have a brown color with a white colored ring around the eyes.
Pinto’s Spinetail
The Synallaxis infuscata, otherwise known as the Pinto’s Spinetail, is last on our list of endangered birds in the Amazon rainforest. Disappearing habitat is the culprit for the low population numbers of this species. These birds have a gray coloring from the neck and throat to the underbelly and the remaining parts are a reddish-brown color with black around the eye areas.
