Outdoor Base Layers

Fleece jackets and down coats may shelter you from the cold, but true warmth and comfort starts with your base layer. Base layers are typically two-piece combos of a long-sleeve shirt and tights/leggings. They fit tightly to your skin and wick sweat away, keeping you warm and dry while working out. Check out the best top and bottom layers right here.

Stay synthetic for maximum protection

Classic base layers of yesteryear like one-piece “union suits” or “waffle”-style long johns are usually made of cotton, which doesn’t wick moisture or insulate when damp. All the best base layers we carry at SunnySports are made from synthetic polyester blends or high-quality wools like SmartWool Merino.

These materials draw moderate amounts of moisture away from your skin. Even if you get soaked in a downpour or a kayaking mishap, they’ll continue to provide insulation.

What style is right for you?

Snug-fitting base layers that cover arms and legs are standard for most people, but there are many other options. Thumb loops keep sleeves from riding up, and collar/zipper combos at the neck give you more temperature adjustment options. In warmer climates, your base layer can even be a tank top or a pair of shorts, as long as they can wick moisture.

Not just for base wear

Base layers have many functions beyond just serving as “long underwear.” They’re excellent pajamas for camping trips, eliminating those unpleasant cold, clammy night sweats. Tops and bottoms are also great for rafting/kayaking (worn under wetsuits or even swimming trunks), especially because they can keep you warm when wet.
