Stay synthetic for maximum protection
Classic base layers of yesteryear like one-piece “union suits” or “waffle”-style long johns are usually made of cotton, which doesn’t wick moisture or insulate when damp. What style is right for you?
Snug-fitting base layers that cover arms and legs are standard for most people, but there are many other options. Thumb loops keep sleeves from riding up, and collar/zipper combos at the neck give you more temperature adjustment options. In warmer climates, your base layer can even be a tank top or a pair of shorts, as long as they can wick moisture.
