Voyageurs National Park is one of the few US national parks dominated by water. It is the only national park in Minnesota and is located on the Canadian border. There are more than 30 lakes in the park that cover about 40 percent of the park and offer year round recreation.

There are many activities offered by Voyageurs National Park such as boating, fishing, camping, hiking, canoeing, snowmobiling and more. Voyageurs National Park is a water-based park that offers exploration of north woods lakes through connected waterways.

Boating

Boaters may bring their own boats for $10 per boat, per day. Guides and boats may be hired at local resorts. The park even has boat tours from June through August, which include sunset cruises and wildlife watching cruises, in addition to cruises to Kettle Falls Hotel.

Lodging

Kettle Falls Hotel, built in 1912, is a historic lodge complete with a dining room, entertainment, in addition to a kitchen. Visitors can access the hotel by boat or snowmobile. Other restaurants and grocery stores are located close to park entrances.

Camping

Campsites are boat-in campsites designed for tents or houseboats. The campsites are accessible by water and are equipped with bear-proof lockers for food storage. There are no entrance fees and no campsite charges, however campers must obtain free permits from one of the visitor centers.

Winter activities

Snowmobile and ski season begins in late December. Snowmobiling is a popular winter activity that is allowed on frozen lakes, safety portage trails, and the Chain of Lake’s Scenic Trail.

Berry picking

Berry picking starts in June with strawberries and continues with the picking of blueberries, chokeberries and raspberries in July. Cranberries are ready for picking in October.

Voyageurs National Park is open year round. Summer months offer Junior Ranger Programs as well as boating, fishing, and camping.  Fall colors peak in September, making it an especially great time to experience the many trails. Winter months draw snowmobilers and cross country skiers.

Regardless of the season, a visit to Voyageurs National Park is certainly a unique experience for all visitors. Take a look at this video offering a bit of the history of Voyageurs National Park, as well as the modern amenities and activities that await.
