Geocaching: What Is It & How to Get Started

April 27, 20171583Views

Geochaching is a fun, active pastime that involves finding hidden containers, known as caches, using GPS technology. If you love getting outside and want to explore while getting exercise and fresh air, here are the steps you should take to get started with geochaching.

Acquire the Equipment

You likely already have a GPS-enabled smartphone, which is really all you need to get started with geochaching.

Find Caches Near You

A simple search for geocaching websites and apps will reveal a wealth of listings for caches to explore. You can search by geography to look for caches in your desired location, whether it’s a park by your home or a beach you’re visiting on vacation.

Choose a Cache to Locate

In addition to geography, many sites allow you to search caches by other factors, including difficulty level. Choose a cache that is interesting to you and note the details before setting off. On your first try, you’ll likely want to choose a cache listed as easy.

Create a Waypoint

This is as easy as plugging the coordinates (longitude and latitude) of the cache into the GPS function on your phone. If you’re using an app to search for caches, you will be able to import this information automatically into your map software to create your route.

Choose an Item to Trade

Many caches request that you leave a small token behind. This should be something with little value, such as a trading card or miniature toy. If the cache has a stated theme, try to choose something that fits.

Find the Cache

Use your navigation system to locate the cache. It can be anywhere in the area of the coordinates, though it will never be buried underground. Once you find it, enjoy browsing the contents and leave your token behind. Many caches also have a logbook to sign.
