How To Correctly Coil A Rope

Rope is one of the most basic, but sometimes most important pieces of equipment to bring along on a camping or hiking trip. From paracord to climbing rope, something always needs to be tied down, up or off in the great outdoors. If you’re like most people, when you’ve gone to fetch your rope, it quickly turns into a jumbled mess.

While there are a variety of ways to tie off rope for use outdoors, we’re going to cover a simple way to coil a rope for storage. This simple trick is popular amongst audio/visual professionals as they work with a variety of cords with every gig. This brief video demonstrates the process:

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Holding the rope in your left hand with the end facing away from your body, grab the long end of the rope with your right hand
  2. Form a basic loop by passing the rope over your left hand
  3. Grab the long end of the rope with your right hand again
  4. Form another basic loop, but curl your wrist towards yourself so the free end of the rope falls inside the loop you created
  5. Continue looping, alternating between the standard loop and the curled wrist loop
  6. When you near the end of your rope, loop the free end around your coil
  7. Secure the end of the rope however you prefer. We recommend pulling one of the securing loops through the main loop and over the loop, then tightening

This video demonstrates how to secure the end:
